DECEMBER, 2008 CLASS NOTES
One upside of the sinking economy seems to be that classmates have more time to network as I have gotten more news over the last few months than ever before.
Mike Fay wrote with news that classmate Glenn Britt was featured in the Wall Street Journal on June 2nd regarding the spinoff of the cable arm of Time Warner. Glenn is the CEO of that division. Wayne Hobin put the WSJ write up on the web site www.dartmouth.org/classes/71.
Judy and Jeff McElnea dropped by my house in Lake Tahoe in November while they were visiting a client in Incline Village. Jeff’s Advertising/Marketing Consulting business must be doing well since his client was driving a 4 wheel drive Bentley (didn’t know they made those).
Bob Trout was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. His primary care physician referred him to Dr. Stephen Johnson, one of the best neurosurgeons in Denver. While waiting for Dr. Johnson in his consulting room, Bob noticed a familiar diploma on the wall. "I have one of those" he thought. It turns out that Dr. Johnson and Bob were classmates in 1971. A little serendipity in the world. Dr. Johnson successfully performed the surgery to remove the tumor from Bob's head just before Thanksgiving.
Bill "Saumy" Saumsiegle wrote that he and wife Nancy went out to Vail, CO last fall to see their son, Dave, who is bartending out there. (If this gets published before the CarniVail trip - look up his son at the Red Lion.) During their stay, they visited with two "old" roommates. They drove out to Boulder to spend an afternoon with George Rountree, and later had a nice dinner with Buck Allen. They are still living in NJ, near Atlantic City. Saumy works for the MITRE Corporation trying to help the FAA modernize the air traffic control system.
Bob Peters was recently recognized as “Man of the Year” by Centers for Decency. He is in elite company since the Woman of the year was Laura Ingraham who is also a Dartmouth graduate. Bob has been president of Morality in Media (for 14 years), an organization founded in New York City in 1962 to combat obscenity and uphold standards of decency in the media.
Bob Cushman wrote that he spent election night celebrating with John Eaton. He also had a great dinner with Mitch Wallerstein in San Francisco as he passed through town on a speaking tour for the Maxwell School of Public Policy at Syracuse University where he is the Dean.
