Hovey Murals

Class of 1971 & Hood Museum

Book Project

       • The College will soon begin demolition of Thayer Hall in preparation for the construction of a new dining facility which will necessitate the relocation and preservation of the Hovey Grill Murals.

       • The Class of '71 has agreed to fund a Class Project with the Hood Museum to produce and publish a beautiful large format coffee table book on the subject of the murals. The editorial and graphic content will cover their story and historical significance. The book will be marketed and sold to alumni and the general public.

       • Commissioned by the Trustees of the College in 1938, the Hovey Murals were painted by Walter Beach Humphrey '11. They were inspired by the lyrics of "Eleazer Wheelock," written by Richard Hovey '85, who also wrote "Men of Dartmouth." Because of their style and subject matter the murals have been the subject of criticism and controversy. The editorial content of the Book Project will endeavor to address their significance from all points of view.

       • The Class of '71 Hovey Murals Book Project will be a publication of the Hood Museum and will be edited by the Hood Director, Brian Kennedy. The Class of ‘71 will offer not only funds, but advice and assistance to see that the Book Project is of the highest quality and a critical success.

       • All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to fund the preservation of the actual Hovey Murals.

       • The Class of '71 recognizes this Book Project as a unique opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the history of the College, and looks forward to an interactive relationship with the Hood Museum during its completion.

Classmate Mickey Stuart is working hard with Hood Museum Curator Brian Kennedy to get through some of the politics involved with this creative and important project.  It may be some time until we see something concrete, but rest assured, it is in the works.
