“My hope for each of you is that... in the year 2001 at your 25th reunion you will say like Kazantzakis: Whatever fell into my youthful mind was imprinted there with such depth and received by me with such avidity that even now I never grow tired and indeed gain strength from recalling it and reliving it.”  (Dean Carroll Brewster, September 25,1972 convocation)

Dear Classmates:

It is time to recall and relive the memories and experiences of the Class of 1976 in the company of old and new friends who shared four years on the Hanover plain.  We are, and always will be, a unique class at Dartmouth College.  The 25th reunion committee invites you to celebrate our uniqueness and set aside some time to return to Hanover June 14 – 17, 2001.

Enclosed in this first official mailing are the following:

·        A preliminary schedule of the weekend’s events. There will be a children’s program available for children ages 6-12 as well as special teen events with details in later mailings. The College will also send information on a variety of sports events including hikes up Mount Moosilauke.

·        Another plea from Sara Hoagland Hunter to fill out a questionnaire for our special Reunion Book. This will be an invaluable update to your tattered and torn Freshmen Book.

·        A green card to be sent back with your intent to attend (this helps us set a budget and get an idea of numbers).

Look through all of the materials and see if you can agree with the committee’s top 10 reasons to return to Hanover for your 25th reunion:

10. Visit your study carrel at Baker library.

 9. See the new buildings on campus.

8. Sleep in a dorm with your kids!

7. Walk around Occom Pond.

6. Check out your freshman roommate to see how he/she has aged.

5. Sit on the rocking chairs at the Hanover Inn.

4. Eat lunch at the football stadium.

3. Dance at the Bema.

2. Be the first class to eat a candlelight dinner on Baker Library Lawn where we graduated.

1. Remember how it feels to be 18 all over again!

The committee was drawn back to the Winter Carnival Statue from 1976--the Statue of Liberty—for our logo, symbolizing the Spirit of ’76 and surrounded by a sail which symbolizes our Odyssey begun in Hanover in the fall of 1972. We will be sending more details, room reservations, costs and our personal pleas to attend as we continue our Dartmouth ’76 Odyssey. Contact any of the committee members with suggestions We don’t’ care how you do it-- airplane, car, foot, scooter, or train-- but just get back to Hanover if you can!

We look forward to hearing from you soon and seeing you in June 2001.

Sincerely,
