PALO ALTO, Calif.-- May 3, 2000--
Former Broderbund executive Lauren Tanny to spearhead national rollout
of online products as general manager of new Schools Division Achieva.com, the first truly comprehensive
Web-based resource for college prep, today announced its entry into the
business-to-business market with its Schools Division, which will bring
comprehensive online college prep programs to the more than 15 million
students at high schools across the country.
Achieva.com also announced the appointment of Lauren Tanny to the newly-created position of vice president and general manager, Schools Division, where she will spearhead the national rollout of Achieva.com's online products to schools. She will oversee all school business activities, including determining product offerings and pricing, managing the national sales force and supervising all marketing efforts. Lauren brings more than 20 years of marketing and management experience in the high-tech, publishing and consumer products industries.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be part of this team; I truly believe that Achieva.com will change students' lives forever," said Tanny. "Achieva.com will be reaching out to groups of kids who would not normally have the opportunity to take advantage of college prep services. Additionally, many of our nation's schools have tremendous technology capability but are not sure how to take advantage of it, and Achieva.com will help to bridge this digital divide through online courses."
Lauren joined Achieva.com from Broderbund Software, acquired by The Learning Company, where her responsibilities centered largely on education products and managing the schools business and e- commerce strategy teams. Prior to her senior management experience at Broderbund, Lauren served as vice president of sales and product development for health education publisher Krames Communications, now called Staywell, a division of Havas. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and received a master's degree in business administration from Stanford University.
Some of the largest school districts in the U.S. have already formed partnerships with Achieva.com, including districts in Los Angeles; Las Vegas, Nev.; Buffalo, N.Y.; San Francisco; San Jose, Calif.; and San Diego, Calif.
"The students' response has been overwhelming. Last year, we had just 15 students sign up for SAT prep classes. This year, thanks to the addition of Achieva.com, we had 300 attendees; the accessibility and convenience really made the difference for our busy students," said Olga Morales, career and college counselor, Abraham Lincoln High School, San Jose, CA.
Achieva is forging partnerships with schools and districts across the country, including both low- and high- performing schools, to offer programs designed specifically to meet each school's needs. By providing SAT I, SAT II and ACT courses, college prep courses, study skills courses and AP Courses and AP Test Prep, all via the Internet, Achieva is helping thousands of students understand and master all phases of the college admissions process. These courses are customized for each student.
News of the moment is that I'm heading to Bolivia with my family for two months (july-august) to perform music, teach violin, and to encourage the children and adults we meet to express their joys, sorrows and hopes through creating artwork and telling stories to be part of an exhibit at our church in the fall, and later at an organization called the Global Art Project in Arizona. We will be bringing similar artwork and stories from a diverse collection of people from our area to display as we travel.
Life is exciting although there isn't much time for sleep. We had a new son (William Maclyn Reicher) on Christmas Day. I just returned from London, where I spoke in the House of Commons regarding energy technology, environmental policy and climate change. I also had a meeting at No. 10 Downing Street with the Prime Minister's energy advisor. Very exciting. Chris O'Brien and I have had a few occasions to kayak together on the Potomac recently.

I left the University of Arizona after 11 years as Director of Cardiac Anesthesia and Vice Chairman of Anesthesia to pursue my true love – pediatric cardiac anesthesia. I am part of the Cardiac Anesthesia Service at Children's Hospital in Boston. I am still running and sailing. I also now have substantially more for research.

My oldest son, Merrick turns nineteen this week! He received his first college acceptance letter and I've filled out the financial aid application. I'm really proud of the way he overcame some real challenges during his high school years. Alison will be thirteen next month. She plays basketball and soccer and is navigating the complicated social dynamics of seventh grade. She keeps me in line and I try to return the favor. Nicholas is ten and in fourth grade. His biggest problem is trying to narrow his athletic pursuits to two per season. For now he plays football, hockey, basketball, baseball and lacrosse ( which I am helping to coach!) As for me, between my financial planning practice and single parenting I am trying to meet the next Mrs. Right. It is an interesting experience to be dating at this point in life. Oh, if only I had known then what i know now! We enjoyed a fun ski weekend with Whit Johnson and his children in February. Sunday afternoon we played hockey on Occum Pond. Beautiful! We ran into Scott Brown.
Left TCU in 1998.
How do you like working for TVA? I took a timber harvesting course in 1981 that was subsidized by the TVA. I left the forestry profession in 1982 during the economic slow-down.

News-wise, my wife's company, C&K Components just got sold, so she's hoping to get laid off in a few months. Our 3 daughters: Lia, 12; Katrina, 12; and Isabelle, 9 will spend most of July in Denmark at a camp for Danish ex-pats. Mimi will take them over and I'll bring them back. We'll all visit for a while at our family home in Svendborg, DK. I'm sure that at least 3 of my 5 sisters will also be visiting w/ their families. My nephew, Cullen Knights '02, is on the ski team and a member of Heorot and had a great birthday this winter as he turned 21 on 1/1/00. Two nights ago, the Dartmouth Club of Central Massachusetts had our Annual Meeting at the Sterling Inn. Susan Prager, Dartmouth's #2 (Provost) attended and spoke as did Steve Donovan of the Alumni Office. We would be delighted to have other Alums in the area get involved.
You can check our Website at http://www.alum.dartmouth.org/clubs/dccm/. I will be President of the Club for 2001-2002. Classmates Pete Renner (wife Mary Thomson Renner '82), Whit and Molly Johnson, Jack Reeder and I will all be visiting Gar Waterman at his West Rock Studio in New Haven on 5/13. Gar's work is great: from sculpted marble to bronze castings ++++. If you're interested to see pictures, contact Gar and his wife Thea at wrssculpt@aol.com. All for now.
