Richard died on December 15th, 1994, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, RI after a long illness.
He was born June 27th, 1956, in Exeter, NH, and lived there and in Ellicott City, Maryland before moving to Mattapoisett, Massachusetts in 1990.
At Dartmouth he did foreign study in both Russian and French. After Dartmouth, he received his medical degree from Albany Medical Collge and completed his medical residency at the University of Maryland.
He was a psychiatrist with the New Bedford Center for Human Services from 1989 to 1992 and with both Fuller Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Mass., as well as the Child and Family Service in New Bedford from 1993 until July 1994, when he became ill.
He was a member of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Marion, Mass.; the New Bedford Chamber of Commerce; and the American Psychiatric Asociation.
He is survived by his mother, Alberta B. (Eaton) Bernier of Seabrook, NH and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The Dr. Richard J. Bernier Award in Psychiatry was established in memory of Dr. Richard J. Bernier, a member of the Albany Medical School Class of 1984, to honor his life and his brief but substantial contributions to Psychiatry. The award is presented to a senior medical student who has chosen a career in Psychiatry, has special concern for chronically ill patients, respect for long-term psychotherapy and diverse personal interests.
