JACK LAMONT STOKELY died on May 19, 1988, in San Francisco. Jack graduated from James W. Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Va. During high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society, played football, and participated on the track team. At Dartmouth, Jack was an engineering sciences major and earned his masters degree from Thayer in 1980.
A gifted student, Jack received five citations for academic excellence while at Dartmouth in engineering sciences, anthropology, history, and English courses. S. Russell Stearns, Professor of Civil Engineering, commented that “Jack Stokely’s honors thesis shows a tremendous amount of work but, more importantly, demonstrates his sensitivity and analytic skill in dealing with a most difficult subject: the responsibilities and challenges engineers face in a developing society – the Navajo Nation.” Richard Eberhart, Class of 1925 Professor of English Emeritus, indicated that Jack had written “poems of intellectual force with marked stylistic control.”
The class extends its sympathy to Jack’s family.
In memory of Jack Stokely, the Class of 1979 has purchased the following book for Baker Library:
