April 2004
Four years ago, Peter Gallenz
answered a call from Max Saenger (Dartmouth??) to help develop a world-class
biathlon venue
at the Nordic Ski Center in Presque Isle, Maine, the former World Cup skier
couldn’t pass
it up. Peter designed the lodge – 88 feet long by 30 feet wide with
3,600
square feet of usable floor space on 3 floors. He designed it around a
blockhouse motif. The trick was to tie the activity – skiing – with
history –
the Fort Kent blockhouse. The 4-year old Fort Kent venue was the site in March of
the first
Biathlon World Cup held in New England.
Biathletes from 24 countries competed, and an estimated 17,000 attended
this
4-day competition. Peter lives in Munich, Germany. Mary Beckman serves on the Board of
Trustees of The Boston Home in Dorchester. This is a 96-bed,
not-for-profit, long-term-care
facility for adults with disabilities. It is the only facility of its
kind in New
England,
and one of a few in the US. Previously, she was the first
director of
the Compliance Department for Children’s Hospital Boston. She has also
served
as a senior health policy advisor for the Executive Office of Health
and Human
Services in Boston as deputy legal counsel for the
Commonwealth Office of the Governor and as an associate in Ropes and
Gray’s
Health Law Practice in Boston. Mary earned her JD from Yale. Francis Powers married Jamie Dutkevitch
earlier this year in Providence. After Dartmouth, Francis graduated from McGill University Medical School. And now for a little class
news… Earlier
in the year, Joy Turnheim Smith
stepped down as president of our
class in order to focus on her teaching. VP
William Rodgers will serve as
president for the remaining two years of the term. Thank you, Joy, for
your
service, and best of luck! Also, Jeff
Weiss will be representing our class on the Alumni Council. Jeff
took the
lead on our class executive committee’s participation project, and
you’ll be
hearing more about this soon. Jeff is currently teaching a course at
Tuck. And
finally, it won’t be long before we meet again for our 20th
reunion
in 2006. Bill said, “Raise the Chatter for 2006!” He will be reaching
out to
classmates, but those interested in serving on reunion committee and/or
hosting
mini-reunions should contact him at wrodgers@rci.rutgers.edu
or 732-932-4100, x783.
