Hey Everybody,
I hope that all of you are having as easy a winter as we are in New England-it certainly has made January and February go by quickly. I have very little to no personal news, which I guess is good. My family is wonderful-Katie turned one last week, so I officially have no babies. We're loving being back in Massachusetts and being in one place. So, without further ado, I'd like to begin my newsletter with a major apology to Tony Hartshorn. I single handedly kicked Tony out of the '89 class by saying he was Vikkie Bakker's spouse, but not an '89. He is in fact in our class, (and he is also Vikkie's husband) and for some reason when I looked for him on my list I didn't find him, so Tony, I am very sorry and Welcome Back to the class of '89.
Onto the rest of your news:
AN UNFORTUNATE LATE ADDITION
I had finished the newsletter yesterday, but received some very
sad news that I wanted to pass along to you. Esteban Oyenque
was killed last night (February 27) in a car accident. His wife
was in the car as well, but is okay. Esteban's family has requested
that in lieu of flowers, gifts be sent to Dartmouth in Esteban's
name. We have decided to collect the class of 89 gifts and send
them together so that we might make a more meaningful contribution
in his memory. This way, we could actually do something that
would carry Esteban's name as opposed to having various smaller
gifts, which might be put to less specific uses.
If you would like to make a donation, please mail your check to:
The Esteban Oyenque Memorial Fund
Stewardship Office
Dartmouth College
63 S. Main Street, Suite 6066
Hanover, NH 03755-2047
Please keep your thoughts and prayers with Esteban's wife, family
and friends. He was such a happy, upbeat, bright person and I
know he will be missed by many many people. I will print any
of your memories of Esteban in upcoming newsletters-the next one
will be written on April 30.
OUT OF THE COUNTRY
Sandra Guylay Lawson sent a green card from Hong Kong where she has recently moved. She had just finished law school, gotten married and had begun to settle into New York when they decided to move. She and her husband will be there indefinitely, both working for Goldman Sachs, and would love to see any Dartmouth visitors.
Kris Williams Pol was married on July 20, 1996 (My fifth
anniversary, by the way) to Evert-Jan Pol, a Dutchman. Catherine
Truman was in attendance at the small home ceremony. She
moved to Holland a week later for EJ's work with Philips Research.
THE WESTERN FOLKS
I got two e-mails this time from people in Alaska. I think they're just too cold to go outside, so they write to me! First is from Siobahn Wescott who claims to have come to her senses about living in the frozen tundra. She recently took a trip to Kauai, where a bad day was in the mid 70's, but had to return to temperatures of 44 below zero in Fairbanks. Here is her sad story. Upon returning, her husband, Ken, tried without success to start the car. As he shut the drivers side door, the window exploded. Since no one in their town carried windows for Saabs, they had to wait five days, during which the temperature stayed at 40 below or colder with a couple of days in the 54 below range. She says it's not that fun to drive around with plastic over your windows at that temperature, and I'm going to have to believe her on that one! She and Ken are planning on moving back to Anchorage this summer, which to Siobahn, who has had half of her brain cells frozen, is warm. Siobahn has finished the majority of her share of the editing of the book Fantastic Antone Grows Up, which is a follow up to Fantastic Antone Succeeds! Experiences in educating children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The new book is about coping with all of the complications of adolescence brought on by the brain damage caused by drinking during pregnancy. She is also working on her premed classes. Hope you warm up soon Siobahn.
Gretchen Shufelt actually wrote from "warm" Anchorage, but she still thinks it's cold there. She is engaged to Mike Stoddard, who is originally from Portland, Oregon, but has been in Anchorage for quite a while. They are getting married in May in Massachusetts, and will have parties in Portland and/or Anchorage, but as Gretchen is in charge of planning these, she says they have yet to be organized. Gretchen says she spent too much time working last summer and too much time away from home. She spent a month above the Arctic circle in Northwest Alaska cleaning up PCBS, oils and fuels at an Air Force Radar sight that has been operating sine the 1950's. She said the first week was great, but after that she was ready to leave. She has worked for the same environmental company since 1989, mostly on disposing waste-a mix of chemistry and regulatory contracts to the Corps of Engineers and the company that runs the oil pipeline up there.
Back in the lower 48, I got a couple of cards from Seattle. Tressa Munoz moved there last spring following 7 years in DC and was pleasantly surprised to learn that not everyone wears a suit to work or works 70 hour weeks. She says that her UGA group is multiplying rapidly-of the five women in her group, 3 now have kids. She just got some pictures of Shannon Ray Hartnett's little baby Paige Plynn. She also sends her congratulations to Linda Salzhaur Swenberg on her recent delivery. And she is looking forward to attending the baby shower of Tracy Geers Harvey, who is due this spring. Dionne Gayle lives above Tressa and they are considering writing a guide to the microbreweries in the area, and are in the research phase of that project. Dionne Gayle was actually my second card from Seattle, and she wrote the exact same information as Tressa, so I won't actually repeat it.
Interestingly, Tracy Geers Harvey (see above) is the next green card in my pile. She is in Foster City California, and has started a business with some fellow Dartmouth alums, including her husband Lars Harvey '87 and Roberta Millstein '87. They provide permanent e-mail addresses and automatic forwarding to the users e-mail account. This eliminates change of e-mail address hassle when you move or change jobs, since you tell everyone your permanent address and keep your real e-mail account behind the scenes. It is called FOREVERMAIL (visit them at www.forever.mail.com). She says you can choose a fun address like: Tracy@dartmouth.grad.org and keep it for life!
Hank Rogerson wrote from LA. He was married last June to Jilann Spitzmiller in Redding, Connecticut. Members of the wedding included Bonnie An Henderson, Tom Naughton and Sean Hemingway. Other guests included Ted Henderson, Moonbeam and Otter .(A reliable source tells me that it might be Marty Mooney and Brian Otley, but I can't say that for sure.) Jilann and Hank are currently producing their second documentary, "Homeland", on the Lakota Sioux Indians of South Dakota.
Adam Glick made the mistake of writing in felt tip pen, which gets very smudged on the greencards. I'll do my best with what I can read. He recently attended Chris DiMauro's wedding and had fun. Also there were: Russell Wolff and his wife, Andy Thompson and his wife, Chris Fuller, Dave Baldinger, Jim Mills and Bob Bennett. Adam also visited Mike Freedman and his wife and twins, Charlie and Danielle, in Chicago. Adam helped with the feeding, but left the diapers to the happy parents. Last week, Adam ran into Jamie Kershaw, who is practicing entertainment law in LA. He also saw Jon Schaefer who is portraying Jim Morrison in an off Broadway play. Adam also reports that Jessica Weinstein is getting married in the Spring, Nellie Huang was recently promoted in her job at Smart Money Magazine and Chris Hildebrand is very excited about something (it smudged.) Jim White has a lovely girlfriend named Marguerite who gets him cool sneakers in her capacity as a Nike executive. Adam recently changed jobs and now works in the Business Affairs department of some company that I can't read. He also reports that Justine Klineman is producing an independent feature film in LA. Thanks Adam for all of the news!
Jennifer Graves is also in California, where she is a stay at home mom to her three sons- Jackson (4 1/2), Hunter (3 in April) and Logan (4 1/2 months-born September 20, 1996, 10 pounds, 4 oz!!!) They have moved around a lot in California, Minnesota and Utah, but have now purchased a home in Livermore, California and are hoping to stay put for a while. Her husband Mike works in Oakland for Forte Software and telecommutes two days a week. Jennifer keeps busy with the kids and stays involved in their church where she leads a weekly women's Bible study among other activities. She sends her support to all the other '89 moms who have chosen to stay at home.
In case any of you haven't noticed, we have another prime time star! Connie Womack Britton is one of the stars of the new Michael J. Fox sitcom, Spin City. It's on Tuesdays at 9:30 pm, and it's great. Let's support Connie by watching lots.
Finally from California, I recently received an e-mail from Sarah
Nilsen who is asking for your assistance. She's hoping to
put together an art show this summer at Dartmouth of the work
of Josh Hane, Paul Gould and Chuck Drake, '90. Anyone
who would be willing to help should contact her by e-mail at snilsen@scf-fs.usc.edu.
Sarah also added some news. She is currently working on her
dissertation at the University of Southern California, School
of Cinema-TV. Her dissertation is on films at the World's Fairs.
She has also seen quite a bit of Julie Minkow. Julie
is finishing her residency in radiation oncology at UCSF, and
will be joining a practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan this summer.
Julie was married several years ago to Jay Forstner and they
have an adorable red head named Sam. This summer, Sarah was working
in Alaska and had been intending to hook up with Josh Hane after
his climb, so his death was a very personal and great loss. I
hope that some of you will be able to help Sarah with this art
show-it would be a great tribute.
THE MIDDLE WEST
Erich Fischer is in Cleveland working for McKinsey and doing some travelling on weekends. He has been to Chicago quite a bit and hit some bars with Allison Berger '90, but has not seen any '89's there. He did run into Brooks Entwistle a few weeks ago on a flight from Lebanon to Philadelphia. They had both been up at Dartmouth interviewing for Corporate Recruiting. Brooks works for Goldman Sachs in New York. Erich would love to hear of anybody coming through Cleveland!
Rani Sellers is in Columbus, Ohio, which she says is the depths of our heartland and is certainly not Boston! She is doing a residency/PhD in Veterinary Pathology (She's studying to be a "Dead Animal Doctor") She likes it, but she'll be happy to be out! She is getting married this June to a Vanderbilt grad who is a scientist and aspiring writer.
Jennifer Block wrote from Chicago, where she moved this
summer. She is engaged to Todd Cromheecke and is planning
a June wedding. Martha Boss Bennett will be her Matron
of Honor. Jen is currently working as an attorney in Chicago
and Todd is at Leo Burnett.
THE SOUTH
Neil Abramson wrote to complain that there was no South
section in the last newsletter, so I have created one just for
him, since no one else who wrote was even near there! He's in
New Orleans and having a great time as they have had New Year's,
the Sugar Bowl, The Super Bowl and Mardi Gras all in one month.
He wonders why you would live anywhere else. He also wanted you
all to know that Tom Murtagh is still a Ted, and I'm going
to have to agree with Neil on that one.
THE NORTHEAST
Katharine Gagne and Geof Hobday are in Arlington, Virginia and were expecting their first baby on January 1, so I assume it has been born! Katharine is enjoying her new job redesigning the insurance company she's been working at for 6 years-the Principal. She's planning to return to work 12 weeks after the baby arrives. Geof loves his administrative law job as an energy regulatory attorney (no litigation and no courtrooms!) They recently attended Mike Badger's wedding to Andrea Dumont (Wheaton '91) at the Yankee Pedlar in Western Massachusetts. The wedding was in the same room where Katie Willard had her wedding three years ago. Mike currently lives in Cambridge, MA.
I got a list that Salomon Brothers sent out of their newly appointed Managing Directors. Tyler Dickson was the '89 representative in that group.
Harmeet Dhillon is in New York for the time being where she is a fourth year litigation associate at Shearman and Sterlig in New York. However, she will be sent to London in April for 9 months to work for the Freshfields law firm in exchange for a Freshfields lawyer. Her husband Dr. Kanwarut Singh will be a product development executive at Glaxo Wellcome in London. He just finished his residency in medicine at NYU.
Jamie Heller is also in New York where she is managing editor of an on-line financial publication, "The Street.com " She is also engaged to marry Jed Weissberg. Jamie reports that Jessica Weinstein is engaged to marry Craig Benson in June and Elizabeth Eilender Shulman is pregnant and living in Darien, Connecticut with her husband Jason.
Fiona Bayly, my most dedicated writer (thank you, thank you, thank you!) again fit more onto a green card than you would have thought possible! She is working for the New York Running Club and recently was lucky enough to HAVE to cover the Carib Cement Company International Jamaica Marathon. They have to start the race at 6 am because it's cool then-only 75 degrees as opposed to the 85 degrees by 9 am. Perhaps if they are looking for cool they could talk to Siobahn Wescott about Anchorage, I forgot, it's warm there. Fiona recently talked to Robert Gallo who has had a rough time of things lately, but is now doing well. He is currently in Santa Fe, New Mexico working as a brilliant set designer for the Santa Fe Opera. He unfortunately had to battle with cancer last year though; he had Hodgkin's Disease and had to wait many months for a matching bone marrow transplant and then go through major chemotherapy before the transplant. The greatest news is that he's in fine health now. Robert and Fiona would love to hear from any of you who are in the areas or just want to say hi. Congratulations Robert, on beating a nasty disease.
Karen Goettsche Lubell is in New York city and sent some news of classmates. She attended Ed Nelson's wedding to Gloria Goldberg this summer. Ed is an attorney in New York. Also at the wedding were Russell Wolff and wife Patty and Michelle Dogin Hernandez and her husband. Karen also reports that Margo Miller is engaged to be married to a nice guy from England, with whom she bought a house in D.C. Margo is an attorney for the Justice Department. Jenny Schofield is engaged to marry Brad Porteus whose sister Kim was an '87 (I think). And Karen also reported that Laura Bordewieck is having a ball at Microsoft in Seattle.
Mark Wachen wrote from New York to announce that he's engaged. He was engaged to Hallie Eisner in late December, and they will be married in August. Hallie is getting her Masters in Public Health at Columbia. Mark is still at Sony Music where he is the Director of New Technology and Business Development, which means that he manages Sony Music's multimedia activities. His main focus is their internet activities where he serves as the general manager of Sony Music Online, which can be found at www.sony.com/music.
Allison Moir wrote to report on Sandy Guylay Lawson's wedding, where she served as Maid of Honor. Sandy married Hugh Lawson, whom she met at Yale Law School in September in New York. Apparently, it was extremely hot and Allison and Sandy were both stuck with HUGE hair! The wedding ceremony was at St. Bartholomew's Cathedral on Park Avenue followed by a surprisingly wild reception at the Union Club. Apparently even Sandy Macarened (I didn't know that Macarena was a verb until now) The wedding was attended by '89's Laura Bedford, Julie Livingston, Katie Beierle Klinkenberg and Jennifer Downs O'Shaughnessy. You can look above in the Out of the Country section to see what Sandy has done since the wedding! As for Allison, she is in Manhattan, working at Forbes FYI and doing just fine. She was expecting a visit from Jamie Kershaw, and they were planning to see the play "Full Gallop", which is about the famous Vogue magazine editor Diana Vreeland.
Chris DeFrancis is in his First Year of Law School at the University of Pennsylvania, having made a drastic career switch after teaching in Colorado for 7 years.
Lisa Tucker sent a very official looking memo from Somerville, Massachusetts, where she lives with her husband Steve and their two dogs and three cats. She and Steve were married on December 7, in an interfaith ceremony at the Stowe Community Church in Stowe, Vermont. Robert Gallo attended , and Tim Burdick, Nicole Bunting '87 and Professor Paul Gaffney tried to come, but a blizzard closed the Boston Airport and made the roads almost impassible. Their attendants included maid of Honor Diane Mountford '88 and their dogs. One dog served as flower dog and the other as groomsdog. They were very well behaved, except that they barked during the vows. Lisa thinks they were voicing their approval since they have wanted Lisa and Steve to get married ever since they met each other at a dog park in January of 1995 and introduced the humans to each other. Lisa reports that they wedding was not without its mishaps (which seems like an understatement to me!) The three hour drive from Boston took many guests 10 hours. Steve's sister's bridesmaid's dress somehow fell out of the car, fell into a snowbank and was found the morning of the wedding completely destroyed by a snowplow( a seamstress had to make her another one in about 4 hours!) The wedding cake baker quit her job and didn't tell them, so they were very close to having no cake, and to top it all off, they got the flu on their honeymoon and literally spent the entire week in bed. I guess it turned out okay though since she says they are now extremely happy!
Pier Kooistra says that since we all have heard of the Iron Curtain, he and wife Dana live trapped by "The Ironic Certainty-that New Jersey exists!" He says he can practically sniff New York from his house, but can't find a good Bagelry anywhere. He says, "Vox Clamantis in Search of a Good Bagel."
Matt Ridenour sent a e-mail full of news of change for him. In the fall of '96 he left Bain and Company to start his own company, Entrepreneurial Government Associates, doing privatization of government services. He also got engaged to a woman he met in Paris with Tom Palmer 1 1/2 years ago. She's from the Czech Republic, her name is Simona Gortlerova, and they will be married in Czech sometime this summer. In '97 (so far!) he closed his company in order to join a leveraged buyout group as a junior partner. The group is led by Chris Gagnon '87. Matt will be living in New Jersey and working in New York.
Dina Hulsizer is living in Canton, Massachusetts and working in Providence, RI as an orthopedic surgery resident, in her fourth of six years of residency. She's planning on sub-specializing in hand/microvascular surgery. Her fiancé, Jamie Galvin, is a radiology resident whom she met there. They are getting married in May. She reports that Amy Beard Vaebris (I hope I have that right, the handwriting got a bit tough on Amy's new last name) will be a bridesmaid, and will also be 8 months pregnant at the time with her second child. Her first child, Madison, is a beautiful 2 year old. Kelly MacMillan will be Dina's Maid of Honor. She was Dina's roommate for all four years of Dartmouth Medical School and is currently finishing her residency in obstetrics/gynecology at the University of Virginia. She is going to move to Oregon this fall for her new job as a real attending physician. Dina suggests that any good looking men who would be willing to teach Kelly fly fishing would be warmly welcomed!
Maryann Mungovan Murphy is also in the Boston area, where she and her husband Tim are working as doctors. She is doing her medical residency at Beth Israel Hospital/Harvard Medical School and has run into Dave Gazzaniga, Jana Morra and Anna Domingues at the hospital. She also frequently sees Meg O'Brien Wade, her husband Geoff and their two boys, Thayer and Geoffrey. She has also seen Lindsey Brace who is engaged to a wonderful man and is working at John Hancock in Boston.
I got two green cards from Hans Manske-one a little late for the last newsletter, and one from the last newsletter. He is back in Hanover getting a Ph.D. in environmental earth science. He saw lots of people at homecoming including Fox Tilghman Cholnoky and Tom and Erin Flanigan. He has also seen Whit Spaulding, who owns Wheelock Books, and has removed the monopoly that the Dartmouth Bookstore had. He ran into Larry Miller and his new wife Nicole when they passed through on their way to a romantic fall weekend in Vermont. Last summer, he spent some time with Scott Garber in Boulder and Mark Zankel on Cape Cod. He then saw Mark again, when they attended a Phish concert in December at the Philadelphia Spectrum, which was a little different than when Phish used to play at Tabard and Collis! Hans also has seen Chuck Wooster, who is recently back from Ecuador and enrolled at Dartmouth in the M.A.L.S. program.
NO PARTICULAR LOCATION THAT I CAN TELL
Katie Shubert sent an e-mail, and I tried really hard
to figure out exactly where she is, but she just gave no clues,
I think in the hopes that she would get her very own category
in the newsletter, so Katie, here it is! Katie left her job with
Mobil last summer with some mixed emotions-she loved the job,
but wanted to be out of California. She spent the summer having
fun-attending the Olympics, biking everyday with Josie, the affable
Airedale, and learning kayaking and bridge. However, that was
nothing compared to her 4 month bike tour of New Zealand, from
which she returned on January 18. Now, she's dreaming about her
next tour, but needs to get the cash first! Good luck!
MY GREAT E-MAIL LIST
I got to this point in the newsletter and said, "Oh no, it's too short!" So, I sent a plea to the people on my e-mail list (185 classmates, why aren't you on that list too?), and I was astounded at the response I got. So, to show you how much they sent me in just one day, here's a section of their news. Thank you!!!! If anyone who is not on the list would like to be added, send an e-mail to me at PELoughlin@aol.com. I'm going to be sending out the complete list to all of those on it, so get your address in soon! So, in alphabetical order, by the name of the sender, here's the e-mail news!
Dave Aman reports that Ted Bush is working at the Hanover Co-Op while looking for a teaching job in the Upper Valley. Bob Reetz got engaged on New Year's Day in Sicily. Bob has been training for the Boston Marathon with Brian Lenihan and Dave Nerrow.
Tom Beecher graduated from HBS in June and has started working at a new direct marketing company called TMSI founded by a pair of other Dartmouth alums, Brett Matthews '88 and Chris Hessler '85. Tom and his wife Karin are now beginning the house hunting process in the Boston Area. Tom also reports that Todd Dorrien has just moved to DC from Chicago to help start up BCG's new office there. Although he's working a ton, he is finally in the same city as his fiancee, Sue Gander. They will be married in Utah in July.
Katy Beirle Klinkenberg wrote about Sandy Guylay Lawson's wedding, which I described earlier, although she added that Sandy looked like a czarina, which Allison Moir had not written! She also said that Allison was smashing in her red dress. See what you learn when you have a few sources!
Marnie Curry-Tash has moved to Madison, Wisconsin with her husband Todd. They are trying their best to adapt to the Wisconsin winter after their sojourn last year in Uganda and their past life in California. She's having a bit of a hard time understanding the allure of ice fishing! She is at UW-Madison getting her Masters in the School of Education, with an aim to continue on for her PhD. She works as a TA and supervises student teachers and is in classrooms enough to remind her of how much she loves to teach kids. Marnie reports that Cathy Compton von Hippel and Frank von Hippel had a son, Max, on July 1st of this year. They moved from Berkeley after Frank got his doctorate and now live in Tucson, AZ, where maybe Frank is doing something with the Biosphere project. Cathy was submitting her Ph.D. dissertation in psychology at Berkeley around Christmastime. Marnie also reported that Nancy Bernard Felix just bought a new home, but she didn't say where.
Mike Donlan sent a very funny e-mail about a recent engagement party for Syd Williams thrown by his parents in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Syd is engaged to Beatriz Chantrill, who is according to Mike, " an excellent person who went to Stanford and managed the football team, and has a good shot at getting Bill Walsh to the wedding" Mike's not sure why she settled, for Syd, but onto his story of the party. Syd's parents have a great old farm that has been redone so nicely that it made Mike nervous since he has trouble getting a lot of what he eats and drinks into his mouth. There were lots of '89's in attendance including Mike Herzig and his wife JoJo, Russell Wolff and his wife Patty, Bill Smith and his wife, Eric Potoker and his wife Jennifer, Dave McKenna and his wife Julie McColl Mckenna and Pier Kooistra and his wife Dana. Dave Jaskwhich almost attended, but was stuck at his "residency/slave status" at Yale's Hospital. Mike's not actually sure that Mike Herzig was really invited, but he apparently was on his way to Foxwoods to gamble and saw people pulling off the road, so he went in. Mike had 3 observations about things that really stood out at the party: "1) A Chris Fuller toast on Syd's behalf was well done, although I personally was busy with observation #2 at the time; 2) The Williams Family actually raises and slaughters their own pigs at this house and the ham hors d'oeuvres were understandably excellent; 3) some drunken (I hope) woman kept confusing Potoker, Fuller and Wolff, and spent a good part of the night trying to congratulate all three for the excellent Fuller toast, much to the enjoyment of the rest of us."
Rob Eleveld wrote from Palo Alto where he and Mike Luther are apparently "rudderless" in trying to find a life after business school. He reports that Kevin Braker and Scott Sims both contracted serious cases of poison oak in Big Sur-probably well deserved since they didn't invite Rob to go with them! Kevin is now finished with his film in the Bay area and is back in LA. Rob also saw Brooks Entwistle a few weeks ago. Brooks has just transferred to the high tech group at Goldman Sachs, so Rob is hoping to see him out in California a bit more often. Rob also reports that they are gearing up for the FIRST EVER San Francisco Dartmouth Telethon on April 2. He's looking for volunteers, so call him at 415-364-9074 if you can help. He says the fundraising campaign is now in high gear, "so please participate and help us to cross the 50% participation level for the first time. As a class, we are gaining momentum in class participation, but still need help to reach the 55%-65% levels of earlier classes."
Erich Fisher added some information to the green card I wrote about earlier. He's seen quite a lot of Lenora Brown lately in Cleveland, as together they've tried to figure out what to do for fun there! He's also tracking down random classmates as unsuspecting floor-offering hosts for his increasingly frequent weekend escapes. Anybody in nice cities beware! Erich has also found time to write another scientific paper (on a subject from his previous academic existence), ski in Colorado, workout every so often and make his first foray onto a snowboard. Come spring, he's looking forward to sailing in regattas on Lake Erie.
David Frey and Beth Wood Frey just celebrated their fourth anniversary in February. They also just celebrated their daughter Marianna's (she goes by Anna) first birthday. David says she is the joy of their lives and that she is always smiling, has blue eyes and sandy brown hair and is just about to walk. Until recently, she called Mommy, Daddy, her stuffed dog and her rubber duck, "Duh", but now she has broadened her vocabulary! Beth is in her 5th year teaching social studies at Scarsdale High School, which she loves and is having mixed feelings about taking a leave of absence next year. She will be taking that leave because David will be going to Germany and Hungary for at least a year so that he can do his dissertation research. He is doing a Ph.D in Central European History at Columbia. When he wrote, he had comprehensive exams in 5 weeks and about 70 books to read. Good luck.
Chris Gates reports that Mace Ochoa is getting married this June in France to some French man whose name she (Chris, not Mace) can't remember. Mace and her fiancé are apparently considering moving to France.
Chris Goulard just saw Chris Drew and his wife Alex, when he and his wife Jen spent the weekend with them on Maui. They did some snorkeling and enjoyed having the chance to catch up.
Dave Green and Juliette Bianco '94 just bought a house in Orford, NH which is just 20 minutes up the road from Dartmouth. Juliette is the exhibitions coordinator at the Hood and Dave is "still working with computers, maps and large databases of mailing addresses."
Anita Hamilton is living in New York and working for Time Magazine as an associate editor in their special projects division. she's working mostly on a new magazine called Time Digital, which focuses on personal technology. She is living in Brooklyn now, but will be moving into Manhattan in April. This is exciting because since she moved to NY from CA last year, she has wanted to be in Manhattan, but has had trouble finding a place. She recently saw Kim Hall who just got her master's degree in biology/ecology at the University of Michigan and is working towards a Ph.D.
Victoria Hornbostel will be graduating from the Yale School of Forestry in May and is looking for a job in tropical forest management. Anyone have one? She says that Brian Klett and Jeff Kaufman are still in New York, and she would love to hear who else is there. Also, she talked with Ware Adams who is in DC, but missed him when she was down there for a career fair. She also saw Bill McIlwain a few months ago-he's working in New York. Brian Bone is still plugging away at Tuck, but has apparently fallen off in his sending of dirty e-mail jokes. Also, Jen Gorman Pinkas is still out in Salt Lake with her Australian man and is studying to be a physical therapist.
Naomi Mandell has lived in 8 cities since graduation and has tried about as many jobs(Mostly computer programming/systems analysis) and has finally decided that she likes being in school best of all! She's now working on her Ph.D. in business at Wharton and plans on being a marketing professor, specializing in consumer behavior. Peter "squid" Langmuir lives in her apartment building and is a pediatrician, and Renee Snow lives on her street and attends Penn Medical School. Naomi also reports that Karen Lofgren recently finished her Masters in Psychology from Boston College and is working with troubled kids.
Peter Monaco writes that he and his wife, Paulina, are expecting their first baby April 6. They bought a fixer-upper in Mountain View, CA, about a year ago, and are frantically getting it ready for the baby. Peter is working for a software startup called Nuance Communications, in Menlo Park, CA. They make speech recognition software for over the telephone applications. In the small world category, Ron Faith '90 and his wife Brandi are in Peter's Lamaze class.
Tressa Munoz and Dionne Gayle wrote a joint e-mail, a lot of which will go in the missing persons section. However, some other news can go here. Dionne was recently spotted in a hot tub with both Ben and Jerry in Phoenix, Arizona. Also, and perhaps most importantly, the first '89 to show up with a newsletter in the Ben and Jerry's scoop shop on Broadway in Seattle and present themselves to Dionne will receive a mystery prize. Too bad I don't live in Seattle!
Dave Nerrow sent news of several '89s. Dave Cushner is finishing an E-Med residency in Atlanta and now looking for the highest paying full time job. He will travel! Dave says he's "still as 'dark' as ever." Dave N. says that Jim Knopf spends all his work time as a lawyer in Oakland thinking about not being a lawyer in Oakland. He also reports that Dan Parish and Rani Sellers are getting married on June 21, but not to each other. He too reported on Bob Reetz's recent engagement in Italy, and wonders "Will Cats and Dogs live together next?" Brian Lenihan and his wife Bonnie are expecting their first child, affectionately dubbed, "Little Tex", on March 14. Brian and Dave are recruiting a Dartmouth running team for the 200 mile 1997 Hood to Coast relay. Look for them in August.
Seth Rosenblatt has taken on new responsibilities at SOFTBANK Forums, which is the new name of SOFTBANK Expos, a company which produces high tech conferences, trade shows, and educational programs. He is now the Vice President and General Manager for the SOFTBANK NetForums division which is responsible for all of the web development for the company. You can find them at www.sbforums.com or www.sbnf.com. He is also currently looking for a house in the Bay Area, and trying to fight the real estate crunch. He reports that Peter Delano is getting married in Boston on May 17 and that Mark Wachen proposed to his girlfriend by taking out an ad on the front page of the New York Times. (Mark forgot to mention that tidbit in his green card!)
Jill Schoenberg heard that Katharine Gagne and Geof Hobday had a baby girl, Emma Crane Hobday, on January 9. She weighed in at 7 lbs., 4 oz., and Jill is guessing that, given her parents, she has gigantic blue eyes! Jill is going to San Francisco in the next month or so to see if Betsy Heafitz is behaving herself. Jill says she has to be since she puts in such long hours at Apple. Jill had dinner with Anton Anderson '89 in LA last week and reports that he's still Anton Anderson '89!
Gretchen Shufelt spoke with Cathy Lee who is in Boston and whose fiancé is in Hong Kong. They will be getting married in late May in Boston. She also heard from Jody Warden who is in Minnesota.
Jamie Spriggs took a position 6 months ago at the University of Maryland teaching faculty how to appropriately incorporate technology into their teaching and scholarly activities. After having lived first in Hanover and then Charlottesville, VA, he is finding the Maryland suburban strip mall sprawl quite unattractive, but he is otherwise happy, professionally, personally and spiritually.
Kenny Steinman is still in Ann Arbor in the middle of his doctoral qualifiying exams.
Tim Williams will be working next year at Merrill Lynch in New York City in Public Finance after he graduates from Wharton. He reports that Lloyd "Moose" Pawlak and his wife are about to have twins, and that Tom Palmer made partner at his Venture Capital Firm, Kansas City Equity. He also added the surprising news that Dennis Morgan secretly married his girlfriend of the last several years.
And finally, Ted Young spoke recently to Brad Elders who lives around the corner from Ted in New York. Brad is married to Karen and works at Sports Illustrated, Ted thinks in events marketing.
Again, thank you to all of the people who came to my rescue.
As you can see I can't write this without your news. Keep it
coming!
MISSING PEOPLE
First, I'll fill you in on a few of the previously missing people who have been found!
Karla Olivier is living in New York and working as an attorney. She switched law firms last March and now works for a small firm, approximately 33 attorneys, practicing corporate and energy law. She says the work is interesting and the hours are great. She recently moved to Brooklyn Heights to a charming apartment with her boyfriend. She's also hoping she's not still mini reunions chair since she hasn't planned anything lately. However, I think she still is! Her sister Karyn Olivier also lives in New York and is working as a bartender and waitress in a great Caribbean restaurant in the Village called Day-O. She is in the midst of applying to various graduate art schools in order to pursue a career as a potter. Karla reports that the things Karyn makes are pretty remarkable, and she says not to be surprised if you see Karyn's work in a SOHO art gallery soon. Karla occasionally sees Anita Hamilton (see above) and Ashley Chadowitz and his wife Laurie. Ashley has given up law and now works for his family's business.
Blinn Latta and his wife Allison are also living in Brooklyn with their children Nathan and Megan and have another child on the way. Blinn is an associate at JP Morgan working in Latin American Structured Finance. In '94 and '95, he was back up at Dartmouth getting his MBA at Tuck.
Jay Swett is finally over the fact that I stole his clothes and dressed up as him for Halloween one year (fake tooth and all) and has brought himself to fill in a green card after being shamed in the missing people section! He is living in Ann Arbor, and is in the third year of a five year surgical residency there. He has been married for 1 1/2 years to a graduate of Yale, which provides them with a great rivalry.
So, there are the people who have been "Found", and now for our new missing people list. This time I got lots of requests for people, so here they are Julie Raggio, Lee Okurowski, Pat Giersch, Phil Resor, Cindy Lordan, Carol Selton, Kara Benson, Lara Porzac, Candace Locklear, Tara Sweeney, Becky Budd, Kristen Roth Ey, Ken Redler and Ellen Walkling. Please let us know if you are one of these people, or if you know where one or more of them is.
Well, that's all I have for now. I'll be writing a new newsletter at the end of April, so any news you have would be very welcome. My e-mail is PELoughlin@aol.com and my address is 49 Collins Road, Waban, MA 02168. Until later,
