News from Summer '97i now live in berkeley. i am a first-year mba student here. it is so sunny i can't believe it. i have great house in the berkeley hills if anyone wants to take in a sunset. i have a panoramic bay view! What a busy year it's been! Having officially become a doctoral candidate in Comparative Literature, I'm about to begin what might become my albatross: my dissertation (currently concerning Latin American Film Culture in the 1960s). As if that weren't enough, I've also joined the newly formed Graduate Film Program here, so it's more classwork for me.
In what spare time I have, I've also run into a few other 93s on
vacations. In March, Julie Donahue and I avoided the crowds and spent a
great week cavorting around London, Englaand, where we were *this close*
to seeing Ralph Fiennes in Chekhov's *Ivanov*. She's still working in
training and development at Simplex, Inc. in Massachusetts, jetting around
the country teaching salespeople about the company's new products.I also
got a chance to hang out with Brandon Adams in San Francisco this May
when I went to a conference in sunny California -- and can announce (with
his permission) that he too must join the growing list of betrothed '93s!
The plans for his commitment ceremony to Bill Fahrner are tentatively set
for somewhere in March (I think) but with the plans including a full
musical theater revue, this may be the wedding of the year.
I'm starting my second year in a Ph.D. program at
Stanford in Latino Studies. I spent the first half of this Summer
teaching introductory Spanish to students in Upward Bound--a national
program that targets potential first generation college students. In a
couple of weeks I will be leaving for Puerto Rico and Cubato conduct
field research on the constructions of race in both countries during the
19th century. Classes start again in September, and I will also be teaching Spanish this Fall.
I just graduated from the Georgetown University Law Center, finished taking
the New York bar exam, and have moved back home (Bedford, NY) for a while.
I'll be starting work in New York City at the law firm of Clifford Chance
beginning September 15, and will be living downtown at 45 Wall Street. I'm
also in the process of starting up the Dartmouth Asian American Alumni
Association. If any of you are around NYC or Westchester, you can reach me
at (914) 234-6544 or at dkchia@aol.com. I was graduated this past May from a dual degree program at the University of Pennsylvania, with an MBA from the Wharton School and an MA in International Studies from the School of Arts and Sciences. I will be going to work for Nestle, France in August, working as a brand manager for a joint venture that Nestle has with General Mills. As for now, we plan to be in France for 2-3 years. That said, the other news I have to report is my wedding which was celebrated last March in Naples, Florida -- Darcy Travlos and I were married after a three year "courtship," that began in Minneapolis post-Dartmouth. Several '93s made it to the festivities, including Adam Berkowitz, Aaron Sack, Grant Gregory, J Gonzalez, Geoff Wheeler, Margaret Field, Cathy Muller, Michelle Apigian, Dan Eberle, Matt Collins, and Jeremy Cram. The wedding bug has clearly hit our class, as by the end of this year I will have attended four other '93 weddings -- J Gonzalez and Jenny Richlin's (May), Dan Eberle's (June), Aaron Sack's (June), and Grant Gregory's (September). However, I must say that Adam Berkowitz has earned the title of "Best Wedding Friend" as he has served as either usher or groomsman in at least four '93 weddings so far this year!! Of course, there is more to come, as I just learned that Margaret Field is engaged to her long standing boyfriend, Tobin Kelly -- they are getting married sometime next June.
Other '93's I have seen recently (outside of the wedding circuit)
include Denny Jenkins, who has successfully been "promoted" to his
second year of Medical School at Columbia, and who is spending his
summer working under a grant from Columbia doing fancy heart valve
research. I also have seen Cathy Muller a few times over the past month,
as she recently decided to attend Wharton's MBA program in the Fall, and
she was in Philly looking for a place to live. Also, while passing
through LA, I went out to dinner in Malibu recently with Cathy Muller
and Jenn Dresser, who is doing well and working for a movie producer. Where is Nicole Mallemont? Last I heard, she was in NYC doing something. Libby is DC, again. Hi, Libby. Jeff Adams--Where are you? Phil Lee, congrats for getting in to UMich Law. Kristen, I've left dozens of messages for you across the country?!?! Anyway, after graduating from Dartmouth, I went to DC and lived with Libby Powell '93, Kristen Carey '93, Jeff Adams '93, and Phil Lee '93. We lived in Ballston, Virginia, in a four-story townhouse. We used to have crazy dinner parties every Sunday night. We also used to have crazy fights, in which I usually got locked out of the house. There was a Tex-Mex bar near our house where we got great margarietas, whenever we got the urge. I miss my roommates very much.
After DC, I went to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I recently got my
Master's in Public Policy and Urban Planning at the Kennedy School of
Government at Harvard. Now, I'm in Portland, Oregon, working for Ecotrust,
an social/environment/economic nonprofit. I didn't know a single soul until
I met Andrea Darling '94. Anyway, at the end of summer, I'm headed back to
Cambridge to get another Master degree--this time in architecture. If
anyone is in Portland, please contact me!!
Anyway, I would like to get back in touch with everyone--please? I don't have an engagement or marriage to report (unlike most of our other classmates!), but I do have a job that I love and a pretty cool pad by the beach in California. For work, I produce software for kids, so I basically create childish games (w/educational content, of course), which can be quite a lot of fun. I'm living in Santa Monica, a few blocks away from Jennifer Dresser '93, who works in film development. We see each other all the time, yet there are very few other 93s out here in these lands.
Nicole Sayfie, Cathy Muller, Courtney Bertero, Christie Carlson, and
Sarah Mackie have all been out here to visit us. Dalit Toledano and Ade
Batista are coming out later this summer. So, at least we get lots of
visitors! I graduated from GW Medical School last month and moved to Memphis -- "Home of the Delta Blues" -- a couple of weeks later to start my residency in urology. Unfortunately, I have to complete 2 preliminary years of general surgery before beginning the urology part. So that makes 8 years of hard labor. In the first three days of residency, I haven't gotten up later than 4:30 am and haven't gotten home earlier than 7 pm, and I haven't even starting taking overnight call at the hospital yet. Ouch. One word of advice: don't get sick in Memphis anytime soon -- I may be at a hospital near you and sleep deprivation is not my best side! While in Memphis, I run into Alex Kaplan '93 quite often -- usually in the kitchen or the living room since we rented a house together here. Alex is working at a local bookstore as the periodicals manager or "mag boy," as I like to call him. He is a M.F.A. student at a local university, concentrating on creative writing. I expect him to publish the Great American Novel sometime before I complete my residency in 2003. Personally, I still think that he should just cut to the chase and hang out in bars, have dysfunctional relationships with everyone he knows, and die a fiery death like so many famous American writers. Actually, save the last, he's just about there.
By the way, both of us eagerly await any and all '93 visitors to Memphis.
The deluxe travel package includes a ride from beautiful Memphis
International Airport to Chez Alpert/Kaplan, first-class accommodations on a
full length couch or futon of your choice, and once-in-a-lifetime
opportunities to visit world-famous Graceland, Beale Street, or a tour of all
of the places where Tom Cruise spit between takes of the movie, "The Firm."

And a great job lead from Mark Moeller '92 (a Leo Burnett alum also) made it a reality. So here I am in San Francisco proving wrong the quote about how the "coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." (The coldest winter I spent was definitely winter 93-4 in Chicago, one day it hit -70). The weather in SF so far has been awesome. It's been incredible to be able to get out and hike UP (something that was only possible on stairs in Chicago). I'm working as a product manager for Psygnosis (a video game developer/publisher) on sports titles. It is a great combination of some of my past work experiences (as an Account Executive on the Nintendo and then Reebok). Before I left the Midwest, Brian Maier came down from Rockford, IL (just about Wisconsin--where he is clerking for a judge) and Pete Essig flew into town from Salt Lake City (where he is trying to sell Gallo Wine, in fact work flew him into town but the timing was pretty good anyway). We did what any group of Dartmouth alumns would and hit the bars. Pete has already adopted his new hometown and was baiting Brian about how Karl Malone was going to be MVP of the NBA (Brian is the consumate Bulls fan and Michael Jordan has always been his man). Thankfully no beer was spilt over the disagreement. I have seen Alec Smith and Doug Roeder quite often in San Francisco. Alec is a trader. Doug is an analyst at Alex Brown. I attended a party with them and several other Alpha Chi's at Darin Hughes '94's place. I would have thought I was in the basement had it not been for the incredible view of the city and the attendance of several female Dartmouth alumnae.
I talk to Marsha Davis, Amy Wiggins and Anne Tisi every so often. They're
all in New York. Not too long ago I saw Mark Hirschey and Matt McGinnes (Skinny) in Boston.
Hirsch was nice enough to put me up for the weekend. I attempted to rally
them to sack Boston, but Mark was training for a marathon and Skinny was
studying for the GMAT. Regardless, great fun was had, even if some of it
was tempered by moderation. What a few years after Dartmouth will bring, one would never expect many of them. The real big news is I'm married now! My wife Karen J. Rittenhouse Mitchell is also a geology graduate student at WSU - we even share the same office - so it wasn't hard to get to know one another. She is unknown to all those from Dartmouth (besides those at the wedding). Karen is from Kent, MN (a bit south of Fargo, ND) and a graduate of UMinnesota Morris - a nice midwestern girl! We were engaged after 5 months of 'official' dating and married 9 months later. We planned for a Seattle wedding since it was quite a bit closer to Pullman than Minnesota. Besides it's quite a big task planning a wedding and going to school, too. The wedding was held August 17th, 1996 in the Japanese Kabota Gardens Park in Seattle. Luckily the day turned out really nice, not too hot or cool, slightly overcast at times with the park/garden setting, the perfect place. The Dartmouth people in attendance were all NAD's (Native Americans at Dartmouth). Hans Klose '93 (best man), Rolf Dagg '94 (groomsman), Dezbah Begaye '92, Mati Larson '95, Nicole Adams '94, Justin Boos '96, Nicole Redhorse '95, Ron Martinez '96(?) and Karl Hill '92. (I hope I got all their classes right). After i got thru the ceremony- i was pretty nervous but survived - the reception was held at a nearby hotel. It was interesting seeing all of our friends together at the same time. My high school buddies, college friends and grad school friends- i wish i could have a party like that every once in a while, without the wedding part (I'm only getting married once!)
Other than that, I'm finally close to finishing up at Washington State
University. I'll have a Master's in Geology after I get the thesis written
(only a chapter or two to go). Karen is also on the same schedule to finish
up.
After that, we may move to Phoenix, AZ to hang out with Hans Klose and
Dezbah Begaye - and hopefully not work in geology!
I will be a 1L at the University of Oregon School of Law in '97. I
finally have an Email address so communication will be much easier.
I got married last summer to a UC Berkeley grad, Pamela Johnson, in
extremely festive wedding in Napa, CA, that was well attended by '93's
and a few other random alums. Matt McGinnes, Doug Roeder, Rob Knox, and
George Roumanis were my groomsmen. At one point during the reception,
Pete Essig's enthusiastic dacing shorted out the DJ's electrical system.
Later all the Dartmouth Alums serenaded by new wife with an inebriated
rendition of the Alma Mater My wife and I are currently living in
Rochester, NY where I'm finishing up my internship in Child Clinical
Psychology at Strong Memorial Hospital and am mere months away from
finishing my Ph.D. I'm sure the thought of me warping small minds will
be terrifying to some, but they've offered me a Post-Doc so I'll be here
for two more years. |
