Fall/Winter '98 NewsHeidi Smith Daileader writes:Well, it is now 7 months after my wedding and I have finally found a few minutes to sit down and send an update. I was very disappointed when I realized that I planned my wedding for reunion weekend, but unfortunately by the time I discovered the "mistake", it was too late to change anything. That being said, I was married on June 20 to John Daileader. Despite the poor date choice, we had a wonderful weekend. The ceremony and reception were in Hingham and Plymouth, Mass. Luckily, the proximity to NH enabled a few die-hards to conquer both the reunion and our wedding. John and I met while working together at Chase Manhattan Bank. After working in Chase's Merchant Banking/Chase Capital group for 3 years, I left and went to Columbia Business School. After graduating this May, I began working for CEA Capital Partners in NYC (a $150 million private equity fund specializing in media, telecom and information services). So far my transition back to the working world has been great. I have a ton to learn, but the work and people are both very interesting, so no complaints! One of the things I wanted to do was thank all the 93's who were able to make it to our wedding (Kathie Hahn, Amanda Brown, Pam (Kunen) Henes, Jen (Campbell) Whalen, Jenny Richlin, Jay Gonzalez, Katie Driscoll, Jess Griffiths, Tim Wennrich, Todd Sisitsky, Grant Gregory and Jimmy Young). It was so great to see everyone, and we really appreciated the running around people did to get there. I also wanted to congratulate Randy Wojcik on his marriage (on the same day!).
What's going on with everyone else? Here are my updates: Amanda Brown has returned to NYC after graduating from Harvard Business School in June. She is working for American Express and also getting used to being back in the real world. Jen and TJ Whalen packed their bags and left the cold in Chicago to settle in Ojai, California where they are both working for Patagonia. They seem to really be enjoying their proximity to the beach these days. Pam Henes is working for a law firm in NYC specializing in Estate & Trust Law (I believe Kara McKenzie works at the same firm). Jenny Richlin and Jay Gonzalez recently moved from Cleveland to Beantown where they bought a townhouse and are (sort of) neighbors with Katie Driscoll. I know that Jenny is working for a non-profit, Jay is with a Boston law firm and Katie is with an internet company, but I am guilty of not knowing the firm names for any of them! Todd Sisitsky is in his second year at Stanford Business School with a bunch of other Dartmouth 93's. We're hoping he'll ditch the west coast to return to NYC after graduation. Grant Gregory is living in Connecticut with his wife Kim. We did miss some 93's at the wedding. Kate Wheeler was recently made Chief Resident of the hospital she's been working at in Brimingham, Alabama (and therefore she and Andy Snell are planning to stick around AL for a littel while longer). Congrats to Kate!! We also missed Jenn (Schneider) and Mike Hommeyer who were attending Mike's graduation from Kellogg the same day. They have since moved to NYC where Jenn is working at Beth Israel Hospital while working on her dissertation for her PhD in clinical psych. Mike is working in Sales at Morgan Stanley. Finally, we missed Beth (Beshear) Toft and her husband Mark who are still living in St. Louis. I've also seen quite a bit of Julie DeTraglia and Jenn Odgen as we've been on the same indoor soccer team for the past few seasons. Kristen Siuda ('94) is also on our team (and getting married in August). No one will claim that we've won any trophies, but it's a lot of fun and great exercise! Now that wedding planning and b-school are over, my life is a little more calm. I am training for the Boston Marathon with 2 friends from high school and raising money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as part of their "Marathon Challenge" team. Anyone who is interested in sponsoring me or finding out more about DF can feel free to email me at heidi@ceacapital.com. I'm sure I'm missing some people, but I've had a draft of this message on my computer for a few months now, so I can't procrastinate anymore. Hope all is well with the rest of the 93s.
Well I just wanted to update everybody as to what is happening here. I finally got licensed to practice law in Colorado and am now currently practicing professional liability defense in Denver at a firm called Treece, Alfrey, Musat, & Bosworth, P.C. I still live in Boulder and have joined the ranks of the commuters. If anybody out there has any idea how I can get a hold Aran Kadar, e-mail me, I would appreciate it (he owes me money). Go Broncos!!
I've abandoned my good friend Seth Alpert, MD,'93, so that he is now the sole representative of our fine class in our home town, the Land of the Delta Blues, Memphis, TN. In case anyone is interested, he is completely domesticated these days, not only buying a house with the untold millions he is making as 2nd year medical resident, but a lawn mower as well. I now live in San Marcos, TX, about 20 minutes south of Austin. I am a Master of Fine Arts student in creative writing at Southwest Texas. So, basically, I read and write fiction everyday. Not such a bad deal, except that it costs money and three years of my life to get a degree that won't guarantee me anything other than comments about how worthless my degree is. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to keep up with many alums. Anybody who wants to hear more about me or to tell me about themselves can get in touch this way:
Alex Kaplan Until then, I will busy myself with writing the Great American Novel. I am not sure how its going to turn out, but it surely will include not-so-veiled references to all the people who were mean to me at Dartmouth. You know who you are.
Dave ('92) and I are in our last few months as Texans and are really looking forward to moving back to a land of seasons. Also our Husky is 2 now and has never seen snow, poor girl. The planetarium I am running will re-open with the latest and greatest in video technology very soon. A children's book I co-authored, "An Earthling's Guide to Deep Space", is shipping now to bookstores.
Greetings from Lima, Peru! Sorry I missed the reunion this summer, but unfortunately it was the only chance I had to leave the country to get to do this rather necessary research. (And believe me, I'm not too happy about haveing missed several things -- not only the reunion, but more importantly the weddings of two '93s very close to my heart, Anna Jaeger and Marianne Ruhl...) I'm actually here doing research for my doctoral dissertation on Peruvian film (which, contrary to popular belief, does actually exist) and the culture surrounding it in the 1960s. Once I finish it, I believe I will be the only expert on Peruvian cinema in the United States! Woohoo!! Considering I'm just starting the writing stages of the dissertation, that will still be about two years' coming before I'm on the job market -- a shame considering the academic market for film studies is pretty good this year. Ah well, maybe I can just go back to being the DFS guru? :) Research has gone pretty well and finishes in early December -- but not before some Dartmouth friends come down for a visit! Julie Donahue '93, Andrew Plumridge '94 and Samantha Stoddard '94 will join us for a quick trek to the mountains area of Cuzco and Macchu Picchu and the rainforests in Manu before we return back to Ann Arbor in mid-December. And no, I am not mixing up my pronouns by saying "us": I am not alone on this adventure, which makes for yet another all-to-common announcement from these columns -- I'm engaged! If anybody remembers that I was the Hopkins Center House Manager senior year (the guy in charge of all the ushers that ripped tickets beofre you went into Spaulding), you might also remember there was another House Manager, Angela Dadak '92. We met almost nine years ago when I was a freshman and really tried to nab each other sometime while we were working together that year, but it took her to go all the way to Poland for two years and me to go to Ann Arbor for grad school before we starting writing veiled love notes to each other. After a rather Victorian courtship-by-mail, she came out to Ann Arbor just under three years ago -- and in February of this year, I gave her yet another letter on the anniversary of our two years of dating -- but this one asked her to marry me. (This after whisking her off on a surprise weekend away to dinner and a bed and breakfast -- and those of you who know me know that keeping that a secret for months was *not* easy!) The wedding will be in Cape Cod in October 1999, by which point Angela will be in graduate school for her master's in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) somewhere else -- which is where I'll be writing my dissertation as well. (We're hoping for Northern California, but we'll see what the admissions people say first...;) Right now, we're just terribly happy together, teaching English to executives here in Lima (while Angela learns some Spanish and meets my family) and missing our cat, Vega, who is still back in Ann Arbor. That's the big news for now, I guess. Just an update on some of the Peruvian Dartmouth folk here: Soledad de Osma just gave birth (like, two weeks ago) to her second child (though I don't know the name or even the sex, I'm afraid). And for any Dodecs fans who know of singers from beyond our years there: I managed to catch Eliana Marcenaro '97, playin' guitar and singin' songs (in both English and Spanish) in a cafe in downtown Miraflores. I don't know who was more suprised: she at seeing me again or I at the fact that she's cut her hair (since I've known her since she was in 8th grade, her hair's been long...). That's it for now -- hopefully no more weddings (or reunions) to be missed! And feel free to drop me a note if you feel your present knowledge of Latin American film is something you just have an intense desire to augment...;)
I have moved Helsinki, Finland (which is where I was born), and am working for Nokia Telecommunications. We've already got white stuff on the ground here, which makes me a little homesick for Dartmouth.
IT'S A GIRL! My wife, Soula, delivered our first baby on Friday, October 23rd at 8:30 am. Baby Alexa weighed in at 7 lbs, 5.8 ozs and was 20" long. Mom and baby are doing great.... Dad's a little tired.... As if that weren't enough, I've also started a new job as a data analyst at National Data Corp. NDC manages data warehouses for the pharmacy industry. My new email address is cboudreaux@simatics.com, or call me at work 602-381-9563. Ran into Jeannie Chang at BOB (Bank One Ballpark) and she seems to be doing great. She's working for Basin & Range Hydrogeologists in Tempe, AZ (hydrogeology in the desert?). Other than Jeannie, haven't heard much out of anyone else.... More later when I catch up on some sleep (probably in a couple years)...
