Read Dave Dookeram's Alumni Council Update

Dear Class of 1999:

I am writing with my notes from the December Alumni Council Meeting.

I will try to outline a meeting summary first, followed by more commentary for those who would like to read on. Befitting the early winter this year, I enjoyed the first snowfall of the year up in Hanover. It wasn't quite the snowfall that we had Thanksgiving week during our Freshman Fall, but there was enough to draw a crowd of '11's(!) to the green for the annual Freshman snowball fight.

Proposed Class Constitution Revisions

The EC closely examined our class constitution and has proposed a set of revisions that we believe will allow more classmates to actively participate in the governance of the class. Our main goal was to propose changes that would accommodate proxy voting, but we felt there were some other changes warranted at the same time.

The main changes put forth in the proposal:

  • Make allowances for proxy voting so that those eligible to vote do not have to be physically present at a class meeting in Hanover to participate;
  • Require that business items for class meetings must be submitted 30 days prior to the meeting, so that the EC can inform classmates of issues and collect proxy votes, if necessary;
  • Reduce quorum for a business meeting from one-tenth of the living members of the class to one-tenth of the dues-paying members of the class, a more achievable number;
  • Allow classmates to directly elect our Alumni Council representative (the representative is currently appointed by the president);
  • Include the Webmaster as an official officer of the class;
  • Opt adopted classmates out of annual dues solicitations, unless they request otherwise.
A complete copy of the proposed changes is available here, as well as a copy of our current constitution. Please take the time to look them over and, most importantly, attend the class meeting in Hanover on June 14 to vote on the document! If you can't make it to Hanover to participate, tell your friends who will be there that these changes are important to you.
