Class Notes - January 2001

It was good to see a number of you back in Hanover for homecoming. While we didn’t get the football results that we were hoping for this year, the young alumni tent was hopping and the bonfire was a welcome sight, even though some say it may have been the last. Don’t be fooled, though. Hanover is no warmer now than it was a year and a half ago.

Eben Darling provided his insight: "Matt Shevlin, Todd Becker, Brandon Henry, George Wisecarver, Gary Stern, Jay Tatum, and I all found time to get up to Hanover to enjoy some pong and some meat as prepared by Brother David Jenks on the lawn at 11 West Wheelock. Despite the cold and the light snow Saturday afternoon, everyone agreed that a better time had not been had in quite awhile and that it had all been worth the fatigue they knew awaited them at work Monday morning."

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that I have found out about a number of weddings and engagements since the last issue. Keeping with the homecoming theme, Jaime Ober and Steve Jackett were engaged over lunch at Simon Pearce on October 28. Back in Boston, Dan Mielcarz proposed to Ann Sharfstein on her birthday in the public garden. "I’m sure it comes as no surprise to those who know us that I said, ‘yes’," Ann wrote.

Victoria Thatcher and Sixten Otto married on July 15 in Wheaton, Ill. Six is working as a web applications programmer in Tucson, Ariz., where Victoria is going to law school. Wedding party members included Skye Gurney, Shayna Rich, Doug Conrey, Alik Widge, Vince Rudzinski ’98, and Clair Jones ’98.

Tom Adair blitzed me to let me know that Kim Miller was married to Eric Hill, a teacher that she met this past year, on October 7. "The wedding was on the beach of the outer banks of North Carolina. Most people were barefoot for the ceremony with the crashing waves providing the backdrop. At the nearby waterfront beach property that was the venue for the reception, the Dartmouth contingent didn’t fail to provide many of the night’s memorable moments. In an effort to facilitate guests into the pool, which was in the middle of the deck, two recent alums carried several trays of shots around the party and encouraged guests to consume them. Although their efforts came up short–unbelievably, nobody fell in–a good time was had by all.

In non-marriage news, Debbie Bender was just in California for vacation, staying with freshman roommate Lara Williams in San Diego, and went to a taping of the VH1 show The List. The topic was "the greatest artist of all time" and the host was Mr. T. Debbie was picked to be the audience member who spoke on camera, so look for her on VH1 one of these days.

Even though it happened a couple of months ago, this one still sounds like it was a great time. After graduation this year, Kyle Roderick took off with Case Dorkey to travel around the country for six weeks. They met up with Rex Morey who traveled with them from San Francisco where they met Scott Jacobs and drove him to Seattle. On the return trip, they stayed with Graham Gunst in Chicago and Landis Fryer in Hanover. Kyle returned to Boston to move in with Rex and Dave Rapson in Cambridge, where they will all be "working their butts off." Until next time…
