Class Notes - January 2003

Class of '99s have been making their way out to San Francisco lately. Kate Berkeley wrote: "I'm very excited that Tully Pruden moved to San Fran and lives four blocks away from me now. It was about time that she moved out here, after doing long-distance for a year with her boyfriend, Mark. She just landed a job at one of the top art galleries in San Francisco: John Berggruen Gallery. She also has single-handedly managed to increase my wine consumption two-fold. Zach Lewis also moved here in September after graduating from Michigan Law School. He is working at Latham & Watkins law firm and living with Andy Cohen and Wes MacLaggan '98. They have an amazing pad: a house with a garage, multiple decks, a billiard room, granite-counter kitchen, an eight-person hot tub, and, of course, a backyard complete with the essential pong table. Chris Chang came into town over Labor Day Weekend. We had a debaucherous time on a trolley car pub crawl; people took shifts watching over Chang to make sure he didn't fall off the trolley car."

Congratulations are in order for Alex Porcaro who, in the Bay Area's Third Annual Knit-a-Thon, won first prize in the worsted-weight division by knitting a Mobious Zig Zag scarf. Thanks to Chris Warren for taking the time to update us on this important event. Way to go, Alex !

John Fowler writes: "After a year and a half of working as a roughneck in Alaska's North Slope Oilfields, I am now in Antarctica. I am at McMurdo Station, right now, but in a couple of days, I'll be flying to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station on a ski equipted U.S. Air Force LC-130. I'll be working until the end of February on the iron-working crew as we build a brand new station at the geographical South Pole. It is the largest construction project ever attempted in these conditions."

Dan Mielcarz and Ann Sharfstein were married in Hanover on August 10, 2002. The ceremony was in Rollins Chapel with a reception at the Hanover Inn. According to Ann: "That evening the Baker bells played 'Here Comes The Bride,' as requested by my mom! It was a wonderful event, shared with lots of Dartmouth friends and family. Our wedding party included my sister Jenny Sharfstein '04 (maid of honor), Liz Kane, Reggie Soni, Pete Woodruff and Dustin Rubenstein. We also had many other Dartmouth folks celebrating with us, including my dad, Howard Sharfstein '67, uncle Steven Sharfstein '64, Scott Wagner, Sara Zrike, Adam Pearson, Katy Weiss Rubenstein '00, Jessica Penchos '01, Matt Richards '01, Jim Peck '67 and Gerry Paul '66. Dan and I are living in Arlington, Massachusetts, and loving married life. I'm really enjoying my new job as a first grade teacher/early elementary reading specialist as a public school in Arlington and Dan is still busy with his biotech job at Antigenics."

Courtney Vanyo and Jamie Peschel were married in Big Sky, Montana, on July 13. About 40 Dartmouth friends flew out to celebrate ('99, '98, '97, '01, '00, and '93 classes were represented). The whole weekend was filled with eating, drinking, and partying in the mountains. The wedding party had three Dartmouth bridesmaids (Jessica Kelley, Amy Yamner and Lysa Janssen) and three Dartmouth groomsmen (Nate Fick, Austin Whitman, and Andy Hilton). Courtney and Jamie are happily married and still living in Michigan.

Hope to see you all at Homecoming. If you're there, stop by the alumni tent and let me know what's going on. Cheers.
