Class Notes - January 2005

Hello 99s! Another year has drawn to a close, and 2005 is now underway! 2004 has been a memorable year. Many of us gathered together to celebrate our Fifth Year Reunion in June and see how much old friends and classmates have grown. The Boston Red Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1918, and ended the curse that plagued them (Great work, Boston!). We also witnessed a Presidential election that held the world’s attention, and made us all consider the direction that America would take. Let’s hope for a prosperous 2005!

Quite a lot has happened since our last newsletter. First, I’m happy to announce two engagements in our class. Cynthia Anderson is engaged to Patrick Hansen ’97, whom she started dating in the spring of freshman year. Patrick proposed to Cynthia at the top of Mt. Mansfield in Vermont last September. Cynthia writes that "he waited til sunset before he got down on one knee and asked me to share a lifetime of adventure with him. Needless to say, I said yes!" Patrick and Cynthia now live in Austin, Texas, where Cynthia is in her second year in the Ph.D. program in linguistics at the University of Texas-Austin.

Nicole Eftychiou is engaged to Robert Post II, a classmate at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. Both are fourth year medical students applying for residency. Nicole plans to go into psychiatry, while Robert plans to go into paediatrics They are planning for a wedding in Spring 2006, and are very excited about the direction their lives are taking.

Good luck to Cynthia, Nicole, and their partners!

Ross Wilken also writes with news to report. Ross is studying for a Ph.D. in Religion at Stanford, and is researching American literary figures, such as Emerson or Thoreau, who have focused on religious and ethical issues. Taking advantage of the benefits of California life, Ross spends time in a cabin near Santa Cruz and hikes, camps and explores the redwood forests whenever he can.

Finally, I have an update as well. I am enjoying life in London, and travel whenever I get the chance. I have been with British Airways for more than 4 years, and have gained broad commercial and operational experience. I am also helping a teaching hospital in Lahore, Pakistan, to improve the patient experience by applying management and customer service best practices. This work has been very successful, and we are creating a non-profit organisation to improve care in public hospitals throughout Pakistan.

That is all the news for this letter. I look forward to hearing from all of you with news, and hope you all have a great new year!
