Class Notes - July 2004

Hey everyone. Two items of note. First, there isn’t a lot of news to report this month. I suspect that it may be because folks are anticipating the return to Hanover for Reunion and don’t want to let all the good gossip out before they get there. Second, I wanted to remind all you Yankees fans that the Red Sox did, in fact, sweep New York in the Bronx this past weekend for the first time since 1999. God knows what the standings will look like by the time this column is published, but us Boston fans tend to savor the small victories to counterbalance the larger disappointments. Go Sox.

Joel Stanton’s wife, Hilary (Cheyne) Stanton, recently gave birth to a little baby boy. His name is Simon Xavier Stanton and he was born on February 11, 2004. He checked in at 7 lbs. 8 ounces and 20.5 inches. The delivery went very smoothly and everyone is doing well. Joel and Hilary are still living in Boston and look forward to introducing Simon to everyone at Reunion.

Adam Young won the Southeastern Connecticut Chief Petty Officer’s Association Award for the officer candidate who does best in the Coast Guard Officer Candidate School’s physical fitness program. Adam was a tight end for the New York Giants before joining the Coast Guard.

Matt Stembridge’s alter-ego "Captain Climate," who appeared on stage with Senator John McCain during the 2000 presidential campaign, has returned from the dead -- as all good superheroes do -- in the cover article of the spring 2004 issue of On Earth, the journal of the National Resources Defense Council. Captain Climate made national news in the winter of 1999 when he influenced the senator to begin a serious effort to raise awareness of global warming issues on the Hill.

It’s hard to believe that it has been five years (and 32 columns) since we graduated. Reunion brings the next round of class officer elections, and I have decided to step back and let someone else take the Class Notes helm as I continue to try to figure out what the heck I’m doing with my life (sound familiar, anyone?). I’d like to say thanks to everyone for allowing me to serve you as Secretary and hope you’ll stay in touch. You know where to reach me--at least until I move again. Good luck to all of you. Cheers.
