Class Notes - March 2002

It was good to see some of you at Winter Carnival. As graduation sneaks farther into the past, it gets harder to make one's way back up to Hanover-but the trip is just as rewarding. For those who haven't been able to make the trek, don't forget to send me a note letting me know what's going on.

Recently, I got in touch with Clancy Broxton, who has been somewhat MIA during her travels abroad. Clancy wrote, "I've just accepted a job in a small town in Sichuan province, China -- . The organization is Medecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders) and I'm going to be an HIV Trainer working with high-risk groups. I've actually been living in China for two years now: one year teaching English in southeast China, four months studying Mandarin Chinese in Beijing, and six months as an intern with Docs without Borders in southwest China. After my internship, they asked me to apply for a full-time, paid position and move up to a small town in Sichuan." Well, Clancy, it's been awhile. Hope to see you back stateside soon.

Willy Wong just returned from a month-long trip to China where he met up with some alums who happened to be in the area. Elizabeth Dziadik spent the summer working at a hospital in Beijing, a far journey from UConn where she currently attends medical school. Xiaojing Wang also was in Beijing for a brief research project on the student environmental movement. "The three of us met up for a crazy weekend in Shanghai," Willy wrote, "Jing and I later flew to Hong Kong where we tried to meet up with Leonora Lok. Unfortunately, Leo was swamped with work at J.P. Morgan and couldn't hang out." Currently, Willy is relocating from Boston to New York, hoping to shift careers from being a consultant to an artist/designer.

Kallie Willets writes, "Beth Westman got engaged to her longtime high school sweetie back in August. Naturally, an event of this magnitude warranted some celebration so a bunch of us got together in Chicago. Kara Jursak and Rob Stirling '98 flew in from NYC (where Kara attends medical school) and I flew in from Stanford, where I am pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry. Beth Walsh also flew in from Duke for a chemistry conference so she met up with us as well. We were also joined by Chicago folks Jenn Coup, Monica Wilkins, Bryan Martin-Keating, and Graham Gunst. Of course, a good time was had by all. The wedding is set for May 2002, so planning is in full effect!"

In other wedding news, Elizabeth Tripoli wrote to let me know that Courtney Dill and Mark Shuster were engaged in October. "We all knew it was inevitable since the two have been together since freshman year, but were definitely excited when we heard the news. The two went up to Vermont with Courtney's family to enjoy the fall foliage. On Saturday night, Mark took Courtney to Dartmouth under the guise that they were going to visit Cara Mathews and Toby Hays at the medical school. When Mark started leading her to the golf course instead, Courtney grew a little suspicious. He then led her to the bench on Occum Pond where they had their first kiss freshman year and proposed!" The wedding date is set for August 31, 2002, and will be held in Courtney's hometown of Chicago.

That's all for now folks. In the meantime, everyone please send your news! Cheers
