Class Notes - November/December 2008

Hello '99s!

It's hard to believe that yet another year has passed us by. The holidays are quickly approaching and many of us are preparing to wind down for the year and celebrate the season with our families and friends. The 2008 American election season is also finally coming to an end, and we are just days away from seeing who will lead the country for the next four years.

As the 2008 presidential campaign enters its final stretch Matthew Stembridge reminds us of how influence, persistence and passion can enact change. According to the May 12 issue of BusinessWeek, Matthew played an instrumental role in persuading Sen. John McCain to reconsider his views on environmental issues. Trying to catch the senator's attention during the 2000 presidential campaign, Matthew transformed himself into "Captain Planet," donning a colorful outfit and a red cape at several campaign events and asking the senator to explain his views on climate change. The hard work paid off and Matthew established a dialogue with Senator McCain, giving him information that would later inspire the senator to encourage the development of alternative energy sources. Great work, Matthew!

In other news, Sarah Kelmenson-Chau reports that Erin Loback and Dan Berthiaume were married in a beautiful ceremony on February 16 at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Sarah writes that the happy couple recited their own vows "and, true to Dartmouth spirit, the bride, groom and their friends and family tore up the dance floors into the wee hours of the night." Erin and Dan then celebrated their honeymoon with a trip to South America, which included a visit to Machu Picchu in early March. The couple live in San Francisco, where Erin is now a district attorney for Alameda County (Oakland). "In fact," Sarah adds, "Erin tried her first felony case the week before the wedding, and the jury came back with a conviction on all charges the night before the wedding." Well done on your first case, Erin, and best of luck to you both as you begin this next stage of your lives!

Finally, Nicole Eftychiou Post writes that she and her husband, Robert Post, have become the proud parents of Robert Edward Post III, who came into this world on August 6 at 11: 03 a.m., weighing in at 7 pounds exactly. Robert joined the Post family at an ideal time in their lives. Nicole is in her final year of her psychiatry residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and serving as one of the chief residents. Her husband just completed his residency in family medicine and has joined the faculty at MUSC as a junior attending and clinical researcher in the department of family medicine. Congratulations to the Post family!

That's all the news for now. I wish you all the very best during this holiday season and look forward to sharing more news with you in the New Year!
