Class Notes - September 2001

Hey everyone. I hope that you’re all enjoying the summer wherever you may be. Here in Washington, which is actually a swamp, we are enjoying a rather unpleasant 96 degrees with almost 98 percent humidity. For the sake of all things good in the world, stay away from this place in the summer if you can.

For escape, I took a trip up to New York City in late June to see off Charles Gibson, who is relocating to Germany in July to continue his investment banking career abroad. Also meeting up for the beer-laden farewell were Jon Lee, Jen Parkinson, John Muckle, Katie Keller, Aman Khapoya, Ed Lalanne, Emily Mulvoy, Marc Conte ’00, Kyo Chin ’00, Ben Oren ’00, Alex Oren ’01, Sarah Winzelberg ’02, and P.J. Wolfe ’98.

Across the country, the ’99 cross country team women were on a reunion trip of their own. Lara Kendall, Abi Holt, Chris Shaner, Aricca Dums, Jessica Smith, Barb Jones, and Ellen Halstead ’98 took a four day camping trip in southern Utah. They hiked, mountain biked, white water rafted, and enjoyed the night life in Moab, Utah. Lara wrote in to report that "it was great to get together as a group again and catch up on the activities of each others’ lives."

We’ve got a whole lot of wedding/engagement news to report this month. For those who are sending in news, I’m trying to fit it all in, but it may take a while.

Noreen Nilan was engaged on Christmas Eve, 2000, to James Pfadenhauer ’00. The couple is planning an August 2002 wedding in Hanover. James will be starting law school at Boston College in the fall and Noreen is working in marketing consulting and research at Yankelovich Inc. in Connecticut.

Alyssa Mocharnuk was married on August 12, 2000, to Gabe Macchia, an Emory ’97 who she met through her father. Becky Prestel, a bridesmaid along with Shayna Rich, said that the wedding was beautiful with the weather clearing up just long enough for an outdoor ceremony. Also in attendance were Alethea Smith, Michael Bruno, Annette Gaynes, Jessica Baldwin, Jennifer Lawinski, Phatiwe Cohen, and Jason Gelman ’00. The couple honeymooned in Hawaii and is living in Providence, Rhode Island, where Alyssa is studying for her Ph.D. in physics at Brown and Gabe is working for Raytheon. Becky also mentioned that she is working in psychology research at the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Boston and spends a lot of time hanging out with the ’99s around town.

Jamie Peschel and Courtney Vanyo were engaged on April 25. The following week an engagement party brought out a host of 99s to congratulate them, including Toby Hays, Courtney DuBois, Carolyn Wachsman, Jason Gracilieri, Scott Milne, Dan Gestwick, Andy Hilton, Kristin Maczko, Mark Shuster, Rusty Talbot, and a bunch of ’98s, ’00s, and friends from home.

Finally, Jill Carey married Derek Yung (Stanford ’95) in Palo Alto, CA, on May 5. Her bridesmaids included, among others, Emily Bahl, Cindy Jwo, and Emily Csatari Poulin, who are all making plans to attend law school in the fall.

That’s all the room for this month, but there are more engagements and weddings for the next issue. And for those who aren’t taking the plunge yet (is anyone out there not getting married?), let me know what’s going on.

I’ll be moving again and heading back to Beantown. Considering I don’t have a place to live yet, I’m sans address for the time being, so blitz or call. Cheers.
