Something Fishy This Way Comes: Private Intro Fly Fishing Lessons for Dartmouth Alumni

Date: Saturday, September 11th
Time: 9:30am 'til 12:00pm
Location: Golden Gate Angling & Casting Lodge, 1270 John F Kennedy Drive, San Francisco
Cost: Free for DAASV Members, $20 for non-members

"In my family, there was no clear division between religion and fly fishing." — Norman Maclean

Fly Fishing is a highly skilled method of casting line, rather than a lure or bait. Other casting methods rely on a lure's weight to pull the line from the reel during the forward motion of a cast. By design, a fly is too light to be cast, and thus simply follows the unfurling of a properly cast fly line, which is heavier and tapered and therefore more castable than lines used in other types of fishing.

Whether you're intrigued by the physics of fly casting (described by the transfer of impulse) or the romance of the experience (recalling A River Runs Through It by Dartmouth's own Norman Maclean '24), the DAASV has arranged for our membership to participate in a unique outdoor experience, in a picturesque setting, right in our own backyard.

Join fellow alumni and friends at what promises to be a wonderful morning, as instructors give us the benefit of their expertise. All needed equipment will be provided. Those wanting to watch, take pictures, picnic, or cheer on friends or loved ones are more than welcome.

RSVP REQUIRED: To aid in the planning of this event, please RSVP by September 3rd to James von Rittmann '95 at president@daasv.org, and include the first and last name, and Dartmouth class (if applicable), of each attendee. RSVPs after September 3rd are welcome, but must pay a $10 Administration Fee.

Orienteering is a fun, accessible sport enjoyed by both professional athletes and entire families alike. Not familiar with the sport? Imagine a timed race in which participants start at staggered intervals, are individually timed, and are expected to perform all navigation on their own, or in teams. The control points are shown on the orienteering map and must be visited in the specified order. Standings are determined first by successful completion of the course, then by shortest time on course. Join up with a team of friends or set off on your own, the first one to the finish is the winner!

Rex Winterbotoom - orienteering expert and founder of terraloco.com - will guide Dartmouth alumni and their families through a beginner/intermediate level course which promises to be both fun and adventurous! Huddart Park is a scenic, shaded park and the perfect location to enjoy a picnic at the end of the course.
