The Alumni Awards are presented annually to individuals who graduated at least 25 years ago. This year, Bob Conn, Class of 1961 and a long-time member of the Dartmouth Club of the Piedmont, was selected to receive the award. Following is the text of the presentation made to Bob at the May 2006 Dartmouth Alumni Council dinner, outlining his achievements on behalf of Dartmouth and the community.

Community Service Event

June 24, 2006
8:00 am

On Saturday, June 24 the Club will sponsor a Habitat for Humanity building day from 8:00 AM – noon in Durham. No construction experience is necessary. The Habitat crew will instruct volunteers and provide any necessary tools. We haven’t done one of these days in a while, but the last one was lots of fun for all, so please consider getting together with other alums and spending the morning for a good cause. Afterward, we’ll go out for lunch and more comraderie. Mark your calendars now and email Betsy Booth Scalco ‘87 at boothscalco@nc.rr.com if you’d like to participate. Annual Dinner Report

Thirty three members of the Dartmouth Club of the Piedmont welcomed Football Coach Buddy Teevens ‘79 to North Carolina for our annual dinner. The dinner was held at the football stadium at Elon University, and after a sumptuous meal, those gathered handled Club business by amending the constitution and re-electing our current officers. Josh Bloom ‘95, a former recruit and player of Coach Teevens, introduced our speaker to the crowd. Coach Teevens then took the podium and talked passionately about Dartmouth football, past, present, and future. He fielded a wide range of questions, and the crowd gave him a hearty round of applause afterward. In addition to the dinner and speech, the Club held a silent auction of Dartmouth memorabilia with all proceeds benefiting our scholarship fund. In attendance for the evening were: Betsy ‘87 and Mark Scalco, George ‘56 and Kitty Robison, Kate Tallmadge ‘40, Margaret Kantlehner ‘81, John ‘58 and Derreth Kavanagh, Ken Lundstrom ‘55, Scott and Joy Rankin ’98s, Nicole ‘97 and Jon Chase, Chris Rhodes ‘97, Alison Pope ‘97, Josh Bloom ‘95, Todd ‘78 and Nancy Hemphill, Bob Conn ‘61, Jack ‘41 and Penny Waring, Tom Andrews ‘60, Dick Whitney ‘56, Ros Whedbee ‘62, Zach ‘ 89 and Apryl Chen, Tom Tiemann ‘70, David ‘67 and Jules Hough, Lucas Nikkel ‘05, Tom ‘56 and Sandy Harper, and Geoff Scott ‘70.

Book Award Program Grows In Second Year

Our second annual Dartmouth Club of Piedmont Book Award Program is off to an excellent start this year. The book award recognizes outstanding juniors in local area high schools for scholarship, leadership, language ability and variety of interests. The winners are selected by the faculty and staff of the participating schools. This year we are again presenting the Native American novel, “The Last Report of the Miracles at Little No Horse,” by Louise Erdrich ‘76, who has autographed a collector’s item first edition for each recipient.

As of this writing, 18 high schools are participating, up from 15 last year, with the possibility of a few more joining in. The schools range from Forsyth Country Day in the west, to Wilmington’s Cape Fear Academy and Kinston’s Arendell Parrott Academy in the east, from Henderson’s Northern Vance High School in the north to Pembroke’s Purnell Swett High School in the south, and include all our target schools save three. Ten schools have already announced their winners, and one has already been presented. Twenty three club members have been involved in contacting schools, in classes ranging from 1951 to 2005. A more complete report will appear in the next newsletter.
