EVENTS CALENDAR FOR 2001

February 22, 2001 (Thursday)

James Wright, President of Dartmouth College, was the principal speaker at a February 22 meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Southern Arizona at the Arizona Inn in Tucson, Arizona. It was the first time many of the Alumni living in the Tucson area have had an opportunity to meet this president, and at least fifty of the clan were flushed out of their usual Thursday routines to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Your reporter, being one of the older alumni, was especially pleased to meet and greet this outstanding Dartmouth leader. He has the physical stature to carry a huge load, and judging from his official comments addressing our group of listeners, has the mental powers to keep Dartmouth College in a strong leadership role for many years to come.

Reading his article "Expanding Dartmouth" in the May/June 2001 Dartmouth Alumni Magazine will give you the primary thrust of his talk at the Arizona Inn last February, establishing the man's consistency at least.  Prexy Wright was concise and informative during a brief Q&A period.

President Wright easily qualified himself an excellent speaker. The president was ably assisted by Nels Armstrong who is chief administrator of Alumni Affairs, and Steve Donovan, another Hanoverian who is directly concerned with alumni in our part of the country.

The Arizona Inn provided a perfect venue for this affair. The activity began on an elevated patio surrounded by beautiful lawn and gardens. It accommodated a convenient bar that was available to those who needed something to wash down the Hors D'oeuvres rather generously distributed by several thoughtful waitresses.

The African Room to which the elevated patio is directly related housed a carving table staffed by a tall young man in a chef's outfit with a large French carving knife. He operated on very promising beef tenderloins, helping the hungry folk get several slices between specially sized and sliced buns. This pleasant process was discontinued a few minutes before President Wright was preparing to speak in the adjoining Safari Room where ample seating had been provided.

The meeting was a roaring success marred only by the fact that not every one of the 260 or so alumni in Southern Arizona was there. Next time, be there!  You will be glad you came.

REPORTS ON PAST EVENTS 2000

January 17, 2000

and

February 21, 2000

Our President, Jim Ross '69, had scheduled two luncheons. Both were on holidays in hopes that more people would come. The first was at noon on Monday, January 17, 2000 (Martin Luther King day) and the second was at noon on Monday, February 21, 2000 (President's day).

The location for both luncheons was the private room at the Mountain View Restaurant, 1220 East Prince Road. The Mountain View serves Czechoslovakian, German and Eastern-European cuisine. Their prices for lunch are a great bargain. Click here for a map.

The speaker at the luncheon was Skip Meneely '52.  Skip and his wife Suzy spent a couple of months in Croatia last summer. Skip was using his knowledge gained from working for Armco (American Rolling Mill) to help out a Croatian manufacturer.   He told a very interesting story about Croatia.  He, and his wife Susy, loved the country and the people.  He may go back there just for a vacation.
If you had been planning to attend you should have called Jim Ross '69 on his business phone at Prudential Securities, 520-745-8900 in Tucson.

April 29, 2000 and September 30, 2000

The Dartmouth Club of Tucson had a Pot Luck Chicken Barbecue at the home of Bob and Jean Ferguson '47 on Saturday, April 29 which began at 3PM.   Bob and Jean live at 11607 E. Old Spanish Trail and have great views of the Rincons and Catalinas from their back yard. Their home is also wheel chair accessible. 32 guests attended the party.  Everyone had a great time.  As well as the dishes the other guests brought, Jean cooked wonderful barbecued chicken.

REPORTS ON PAST EVENTS 1999

Thursday,  February 11, 1999

Dinner at 6.30 p.m. at the Club 21,  2920 N. Oracle Road.  Nels Armstrong '71 was called back to Hanover to field urgent developments on the Alumni front.   The response from alumni to the Dartmouth Trustee's announcement of five principles for future social and residential life at the college had created a flood of responses from all over the nation.   Hanover suddenly became the center of attention.   Dartmouth Club of Southern Arizona not only felt the impact of Nels departure to the Alumni front in Hanover,  but with the guidance of President Jim Ross had a great opportunity to speak out.   Reactions to the earthshaking announcements from the trustee and President James Wright were varied and well spoken.  Our meeting served as a ready soap box for alumni at our meeting.   It was exciting to see the spontaneity and enthusiasm of the gathering.   You shoulda,  coulda,  woulda,  been there.

Habitat for Humanity.   Dartmouth Alumni volunteered to help build a house.  No skills required.  What Habitat wants is willing learners for one day's effort at community building.  They have job bosses who will teach us how to use tools if we need teaching, and who will guide us as we help them build a house.  It is especially important, if you are eager to work, not to feel intimidated because you are not used to handling tools or you are not physically strong (but you should be physically fit ).  The work is easy to learn and much of it does not require significant physical strength.  Our club provided 5 volunteers.

Saturday,  April 10, 1999Pot-luck get-together at Bob '47 and Jean Ferguson's house 11607 East Old Spanish Trail between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m..  Bob and Jean furnished the barbecued brisket and Mexican chicken Kiev and soft drinks and beer.  Those attending brought salads, casseroles, and desserts and any beer/wine they wanted to drink.   This was a great party.  There were lots of new faces and the food that Jean prepared was superb.  Among the new faces were Bob Miller '44, a former President of this Club,  his son,  Kim Miller '75,  and grand-daughter Lindsay.  Others we haven't seen lately that attended were Bruce Symonds '45 and Ken Thompson '46.  We were especially glad to see a representative of the Class of '97, Kim Bal a student at the U of A Law School.  We hope she got some good tips on practicing law from Kim Miller '75 to whom we saw her talking.  The weather cooperated.  It was a perfect day and most of us were on the patio enjoying the view.

A Tribute to Native Americans choreographed by Moses Pendleton '71:
This event was suggested by Joan Picken.

"The Legends" is a new, modern, evening-long music-and-dance tribute to Native American culture presented by Ballet Arizona.  Written by Michael Uthoff,  it is choreographed by Uthoff,  artistic director,  and Moses Pendleton,  founder of Pilobus and Momix,  with a score written and performed by Native American Flutist,  R. Carlos Nakai.

It is the first time Pendleton, born and raised on a dairy farm in northern Vermont,  and Nakai, a Navajo-Ute native of Flagstaff and a Tucson resident,  have collaborated with Ballet Arizona. Pendleton founded Pilobolus Dance Theater in 1971,  the year he graduated from Dartmouth College.  It has won worldwide acclaim for its blend of acrobatics and imagination.

Nakai was a 1994 Grammy Award finalist for his Ancestral Voices album.

The performance will be held at the Pima Community College Center for the Arts,  West Campus,  2202 W. Anklam Road.  The tickets cost $36 for the center downstairs,  $26 for the sides downstairs and the center of the balcony,  and $16 for the sides of the balcony.   The Dartmouth Club of Tucson can obtain a 15% discount if we buy ten or more tickets.  We will buy a block of $26 tickets when you send us your check made payable to the Dartmouth Club of Tucson.   Please send us your check no later than April 15th.  If you decide you want to attend after March 15th,  you can always purchase individual tickets from Ballet Arizona. Accompanying each selection was appropriately chosen and complimentary cheeses and other sundry victuals. The date was Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Lotus Garden,  5975 E.
