(Almost) Got it Made @ Bryant Lake Bowl

Local Dartmouth alum Maureen Kane Berg '83 has written a musical comedy called "(Almost) Got It Made", which opened at the Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater this past Saturday night to a packed and very appreciative crowd. Local theater group The Flower Shop Project is producing this lighthearted send-up of office politics, corporate corruption and modern romance. Follow Molly Merriweather as she climbs the corporate ladder in the real estate development business, with Freddy -- her romantically-challenged assistant, and Chloe -- her glamorous best friend, by her side.

While at Dartmouth, Maureen wrote award-winning lyrics for the Hums contest, and acted in and directed several plays. Maureen is also a graduate of the University of Chicago Law School -- where she participated in the Law School Musical, eventually directing it. After law school, she formed an all-lawyer comedy troupe that performed several times at Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago. Maureen practiced law for fifteen years, before moving to the Twin Cities in 2002. At that point, she decided to take the time necessary to combine all these experiences into writing her first full-length musical.

This production will play at the Bryant-Lake Bowl all remaining Saturdays in November: November 10, 17 and 24 at 7:00 p.m. Starting at 5:30 p.m. on November 10th there will also be a "Meet the Playwright" catered reception at the theater. All are invited.

Tickets to the show can be purchased online at www.bryantlakebowl.com (choose link for "Theater;" choose any Saturday night in November and press "Buy Tickets Online" under the "Almost Got It Made" blurb). You can get more information about the theater group, Maureen's Playwright Profile, and find another link to buy tickets at www.theflowershopproject.com. You can get tickets at the door, but given last week's packed house, get there early!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Dartmouth alumnus, Phil Olson and his brother, Paul Olson, have once again created a holiday musical comedy for the whole family. Following the play, playwright Phil Olson '79 will address our DCMW group. Phil Olson has written Four award winning plays about small towns in Minnesota. Phil's plays are published and have played in over 70 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada.

He comes back in his dream where he's visited by folk legend, Sven Yorgensen, who plays the ghost of Christmas past, present, and future. Sven takes Gunner (Scrooge) on a journey similar to that in Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol" only very different. Will Gunner come out of his coma and find redemption with Clara at The Bunyan? Find out.

Featuring 17 original songs including: The Christmas Cheese Polka, Gunner Fell Into an Ice Hole, The Wheel is Turnin’ but the Hamster is Dead, I Love You More Than Football, Stuck in a Chimney, The Bunyan Beguine and I'd Rather be Naughty. The Devil Came on Horseback

DCMW members:
This week, the documentary The Devil Came on Horseback will be playing at the Bell Auditorium. Co-directed by Annie Sundberg '90 and Rickie Stern '87, the film follows Marine Captain Brian Steidle journey to Sudan as an unarmed military observer working for the African Union. He is a witness to what many believe is genocide in the western Darfur region, a conflict that has claimed 400,000 lives and displaced 2.5 million people. In the transformation from soldier to observer to witness and activist, we see a man at first confounded by his naiveté and the confronted by the urgency of a humanitarian catastrophe that he sees unfolding firsthand.

An everyman figure, Steidle is initially unequipped to absorb the horror around him. Like many, he would rather not engage with something so incomprehensible and terrible. But he does, and Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern's (co-directors of the award winning documentary The Trials of Darryl Hunt ) astonishing film brings his journey to light and reveals evidence of a crisis that cannot be denied.

What: The Devil Came on Horseback, co-directed by Annie Sundberg '90 and Ricki Stern '87
Where: Bell Auditorium, on the U of M campus. 10 Church Street Se. Minneapolis, MN 5541
When: Showing Oct 15 - 17, 7:15 & 9 pm. Annie Sundberg will be present Tuesday & Wednesday evenings for Q & A sessions after the film.

Her television credits include Series Producer for Hybrid Films on the first season of A&E’s “Family Plots” – a thirteen part documentary series about a family run funeral parlor. As producer and director, she helped launch the recent series “Now Who’s Boss” for New York Times Television, which premiered in February 2004 on TLC. Ms. Sundberg's producing credits also include the 1996 Academy Award and Emmy winning "One Survivor Remembers," a co-production of HBO and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the 1995 ten-part "History of American Cinema Project" for PBS. Since starting her work in film as a reader for Miramax, she has worked extensively as a freelance writer and producer. After completing a National Outdoor Leadership School semester in Kenya, Ms. Sundberg taught English language skills through the World Food Programme in Nairobi. She is a graduate of Dartmouth College, where she earned a BA in English Literature.

Community Service Event

The community service event held for Bolder Options on Sunday, July 8, 2007 was a tremendous success. Thank you to everyone who was able to help during the event or give of their time in the planning stages over the last year. We had over 20 alumni and family members spend their Sunday afternoon in the heat and then rain to help set up and serve food at the BBQ which was held for about 60 Bolder Options mentors, mentees, family members, and staff. The event was to welcome home 10 supporters of Bolder Options who had biked from Bolder, CO over the past 14 days. Their group raised approximately $40,000 for the organization through this bike ride, and Bolder Options was very thankful for our support of this event.

Bolder Options is a tremendous organization with many ways that we can get involved as a club or you as an individual. If you have any question about Bolder Options, or would like to learn about other ways you can get involved in the future, please contact Aaron Larson at  or via phone at 612-636-8838. More information can also be found at their website, as well as a link to a recent clip from the “Today Show”.

WELCOME THE CLASS OF '11 TO DARTMOUTH

The Admissions process is coming to its conclusion and soon those "thick envelopes" will be going out to some of our Minnesota high school seniors who will become members of the Dartmouth Class of 2011. A long tradition established by our Club -- and copied by many others -- is to deliver a Dartmouth T shirt to the newly admitted candidates. With expectations of good results from the Admissions Committee, we will need at least a dozen alumni to help out with the T shirt drop.

Please join us on Monday, April 2, at 5:00 p.m. at the Champps Restaurant, located in Butler Square in downtown Minneapolis on the corner of 6th Street and First Avenue, near Target Center. We'll have refreshments and pass out names, addresses, maps and T shirts for delivery. It is always great fun to meet these students, so please put it on your calendar and help us welcome them to our Dartmouth family.

For more information, contact District Enrollment Director Dennis Ryan '81 at (612) 766-6810, dryan@faegre.com
