DARTMOUTH CLUB OF THE VAIL REGION

Dear Vail Dartmouth Clubbers,

Last Friday, we had a very enjoyable gathering of Dartmouth alumni and friends at our local party spot, the Sonnenalp Hotel. And in a surprise to the assembled group, we had a visit by the Dartmouth Captain, Taylor Grant '06, of the 2006 Champions of US Collegiate Skating, and her lovely mother, Edna Chang Grant. Taylor and her mother drove over from their hometown of Littleton, Colorado, to share in our Club celebration of the successful season for Dartmouth Winter Sports, particularly the amazing third straight championship performance by the Skating team.

All who spoke to Taylor recognized what an attractive, gifted and intelligent person she is. She is definitely someone we can feel very proud to have had as a representative of Dartmouth College as a student, and now as a young alumnus. Her interest in skating is going beyond the college level as her first work experience as an alumnus will be a six month stint as a professional skater on a cruise ship. At this point, Taylor would like to make a career or professional skating.... And she just might do it!

With the exception of the Habitat building day on this Saturday, Aug 12 (contact Tom Healy quickly if you are interested.... tomh35@comcast.net), our too short summer season is coming to an end. And despite the sometime high temperatures where you are (not of course in delightful Vail!), we are putting together our plans for the coming ski season. If you have ideas of things you would like the club to think about doing this next season, please let me or one of our Executive Committee members know.

The highlight of this next ski season should be our fifth Annual Dartmouth Winter CarniVAIL, March 2-4, 2007. Because we now have so many Class groups, the Tuck School and others interested in this annual opportunity to revisit what Winter Carnival in Hanover was like when there were solid snowfalls in the East, we need to get our basic schedule together so reservations, etc., can be properly arranged.

This year we are looking at expanding our range of organized events to include our usual Friday 9:15 Photo Op Melee/Lunch at Sarge's/Cocktails at the Sonnenalp; the first annual Dartmouth Alumni Nastar Ski Races on Saturday; the first Dartmouth Winter CarniVAIL Dinner on Saturday night; and an early morning (Dawnbusters at 7:30AM!) ski start on Sunday arranged just for Dartmouth alumni/friends with a full "Dartmouth" breakfast at the Game Creek Club at 9:30 AM! We'll send out the full schedule shortly, but spread the word..... the place to be for Dartmouth Skiers on March 2-4, 2007 is Vail, Colorado....

We would appreciate hearing from volunteers who might like to pitch in on the organization of one of the events for CarniVAIL..... I'm particularly interested in finding some former Dartmouth Ski Team members who would help organize the Dartmouth Alumni Races on Saturday morning! This is a first time event so what we do is up to us, but it should be fun!

Happy travels, and look forward to etalking to your soon...

Best regards,
Steve Waterhouse '65, President.... and the Officers/Executive Committee of Gerry Huttrer '60, Alan Danson '60, Joe McHugh '60, Sara Jardis '93, Diane Boyer '78, Jane and Tom Healy '56, Jim Butterworth T'91, Steve Cheheyl '67 and Richard Pomboy '60

Dartmouth Club of the Vail Region General Information

This group is an affiliation group formed by alums in the Vail, Colorado region for the purposes of organizing get-togethers in Vail and its environs - a self-styled Dartmouth "adventure." It was formed in recognition of the large number of alums who are seasonal or full-time residents of the mountain communities in the area. Clearly the historic Dartmouth skiing connection has given the group a focus, reflecting what has attracted many of the group to the area. It is not intended to undertake the responsibilities of a regular alumni club (organizing applicant interviews, hosting formal college events, etc.), which continue to be the focus of the Dartmouth Association of the Rocky Mountains (DARM), both in Vail and in the greater rocky mountain region.

The group encourages all Dartmouth alums that find themselves in the Vail region from time to time (whether on a day trip from Denver, a ski vacation from wherever, or as temporary or permanent residents in the nearby mountain communities) to participate by joining (see information below) or just be attending the events as they are scheduled from time to time (see events information).

The primary contacts are Steve Waterhouse, President and Gerry Huttrer '60, Secretary/Treasurer. They are encouraging those who are interested to "join" by providing their names and contact information (email is their lifeline, so provide an email address) and $25 in annual dues to Gerry (by check payable to "Dartmouth Club Vail Region"), sent as follows:
