The third national tour of the Broadway smash hit Dreamgirls finished a successful run at the Colonial Theatre in Boston last Sunday. The Tony winning play has a cast member who has close ties to New England. Kimberly Marable not only attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire but her grandparents Edward and Haroldine Tyler reside in Dorchester. Marable started her career as an intern in management at Northern Stage, a regional theater in southeastern Vermont. After a year, Marable left the theater and returned to New York to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress, “In April of 2006, the job was over and I was very much ready to go back to New York and try to make a name for myself,” she said. Shortly after returning to New York, she got her first big break in the national tour of The Wedding Singer and a year later, landed a role as one of The Dynamites in the Tony Award winning play Hairspray.

Marable considers being cast in Dreamgirls as “a pretty unique experience.” Casting for the play started at the end of 2008 and in April of 2009 she submitted her resume electronically while still on tour with Hairspray. During a two week break, prior to the start of the international tour which was to begin in Japan, The Dynamites were asked to audition for the role of The Stepp Sisters in Dreamgirls, “We were in California. We literally finished our show that Sunday night, put our luggage in the car, drove as fast as we could to a town that was 90 miles away, got to an airport, got on the redeye to New York and auditioned that Monday,” she said. Marable received two callbacks where she sang and danced for casting directors and the rest is history, “A week and a half later they called and offered me the job,” recalled Marable.

The national tour of Dreamgirls started at the Apollo Theater in New York in November of 2009 and to date has visited seven cities. The company rehearses twice a week and in addition to her responsibilities as one of the Stepp Sisters and a member of the ensemble, she serves as Assistant Dance Captain, “I am responsible for knowing all the choreography in the show, taking notes and making sure that people are doing the choreography that we’ve been given,” Marable said. During its run in Boston, the cast celebrated the performance of the 100th show with a get together at Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery. After a six day run in Columbus, Ohio, the show will begin a four month engagement in Los Angeles on February 25th. The company expects to be on the road through the remainder of 2010 and an overseas tour and possible run on Broadway in 2011 are anticipated.

Life couldn’t be better for the talented actress who spends her downtime checking out historical sites and shopping. While on the road, Marable has had many memorable experiences. But the one that she cherishes most is working with fellow cast members, “This is the first time that I’ve been in an all-Black show. I think that’s probably the case for most of us,” she said. “What I’ve enjoyed the most is the family atmosphere. This group of people is one big family reunion.”
