Freshman Dorm Rules - 1915

Paul James Halloran, Dartmouth ’19 and Thayer ’20 wrote down everything in his life, including the Freshman Dormitory Rules in effect when he matriculated to our great College in 1915.   Sister Joanie found these recently in some family files, and I thought we would all enjoy.

  1. All freshmen must be supplied with cigarettes and tobacco for the use of upperclassmen at any time.
  2. All Freshmen must ascend the stairs backwards, counting stairs aloud and on the 9th step give a Wah-Hoo-Wah for ‘19
  3. All Freshmen on entering an upperclassman’s room must remove offending headgear, must pardon themselves for intruding and must say sir when speaking to him.
  4. When meeting an upperclassman all freshmen must say the following “Oh high and mighty sir I humbly acknowledge you to be my superior.”
  5. When meeting the janitor all freshmen must say “Oh exalted keeper of the earth I bow before your dust.”
  6. All freshmen must leave the dormitory by the rear door, the one facing the library.
  7. All freshmen must suspend shaving until Thursday and will then shave only on one side.
  8. All Freshmen must report every a.m. barefooted , but otherwise fully dressed, in front of the dorm at seven o’clock sharp and give:
  • A Wah Hoo Wah for Dartmouth
  • A Wah Hoo Wah for 1919
  • An Indian yell for Reid
  1. Notice about the clothing that all freshman shall wear, will be posted each morning.  Every freshman is held responsible for these notices and any change of clothing ordered must be made immediately after the last class of the day.
  2. All freshmen must report in the top floor of the dorm at 9:00 o’clock every night.  After the roll is called, football and cross country candidates will be excused to go to their rooms.  It is advised that old clothing be worn.
  3. It is extremely inadvisable to disregard in the least way, any of these rules.
