Wakefield - Robert J. McDonough Robert J. "Bob" McDonough, 68, a 26-year resident of Wakefield and formerly of Woburn, died January 14, 2008, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Medford, March 28, 1939.

He grew up in Woburn, where he attended Woburn public schools and graduated from Woburn High School in 1956. He was a member of the Class of 1957 at Kimball Union Academy. Mr. McDonough enlisted into the U.S. Navy on November 19, 1958. He served aboard the USS Hank during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on August 26, 1960. Following his discharge, he furthered his education at Dartmouth College and graduated October 12, 1963.

In 1963, Mr. McDonough followed the footsteps of both of his parents and began his career in education. He was a highly regarded social studies teacher at the John F. Kennedy Middle School in Woburn for 36 years. He was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. In addition to his joy of teaching, his other passion was tennis. He played for the Wakefield Tennis League for more than two decades and played on Cape Cod for more than 30 summers.

Mr. McDonough enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially at his summer home in Falmouth, where he enjoyed reading. He also loved watching the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Bruins and Wimbledon. Mr. McDonough was the devoted father of Devin B. McDonough, husband of Tara, of Malden; loving "Grandpa" to Lily M. McDonough; former husband of Marsha (Friel) McDonough of Falmouth; son of the late Bartholomew and Margaret (Foley) McDonough; brother of Mary Heckman, wife of David, of Billerica, Julie Hayes, wife of John, of Brockton, Bart "Jamie" McDonough of Brighton and Loretta Willett of Woburn; and dear friend of Deborah Phillips of Salem.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. His funeral will be held Friday, January 18, at 8:45 a.m. from Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St., Melrose, at the Wakefield line, followed by his funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 280 Main St., Woburn. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, January 17, 4-8 p.m. A private burial service will be held at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Bourne.
